São José Theater
The São José Theater (Portuguese language, Portuguese: ''Theatro São José'') was an important venue located in Largo São Gonçalo, now Doutor João Mendes Square, in the Brazilian city of São Paulo. Inaugurated on September 4, 1864, its first premises accommodated 1,200 people. In 1898, a fire destroyed the building and a new theater was erected next to the Viaduto do Chá. Designed by architect Carlos Ekman, the new venue had a capacity for 3,000 people and was inaugurated on December 28, 1909. The São José Theater, affected by the establishment of the Theatro Municipal (São Paulo), Municipal Theater of São Paulo in 1911, remained active until 1919. Later, it was acquired by São Paulo Tramway, Light and Power Company, Light São Paulo, which used its facilities until 1924, when it was demolished to house the Alexandre Mackenzie Building, inaugurated in 1929. James Sidney Jones (17 June 1861 – 29 January 1946), usually credited as Sidney Jones, was an English conductor and composer, who was most famous for composing the musical scores for a series of Edwardian musical comedy, musical comedy hits in the late Victorian era, Victorian and Edwardian periods. Jones's most famous musical was ''The Geisha'', but several of his pieces were among the most popular shows of the era, enjoying long runs, international tours and revivals. Owen Hall (10 April 1853 – 9 April 1907) was the principal pen name of the Irish-born theatre writer, racing correspondent, theatre critic and solicitor, James Davis, when writing for the stage. The Geisha
''The Geisha, a story of a tea house'' is an Edwardian musical comedy in two acts. The score was composed by Sidney Jones to a libretto by Owen Hall, with lyrics by Harry Greenbank. Additional songs were written by Lionel Monckton and James Philp. ''The Geisha'' opened in 1896 at Daly's Theatre in London's West End, produced by George Edwardes. The original production had the second longest run of any musical up to that time. The cast starred Marie Tempest and C. Hayden Coffin, with dancer Letty Lind and comic Huntley Wright. Antônio Carlos Gomes (; 11 July 1836 in Campinas – 16 September 1896 in Belém) was a Brazilian composer notable for being the first New World composer whose work was accepted by Europe. He was the only non-European who was successful as an opera composer in Italy, during the "golden age of opera", contemporary to Verdi and Puccini and the first composer of non-European lineage to be accepted into the Classic tradition of music.
