Syrphus Larva
''Syrphus'' is a genus of hoverflies. It can be distinguished from other genera of the Tribe (biology), tribe Syrphini because it is the only genus that has long hairs on the upper surface of the lower lobe of the calypter (as well as hairs on the rear margin of the calypter as in most Syrphini). Eupeodes Americanus And Puparium
''Eupeodes'', the aphideater flies, are a genus of moderate hoverflies in the family Syrphidae. They are distributed worldwide. They are black with yellow markings and can be easily confused with other genera in the Syrphini tribe. Larvae feed on a wide variety of aphids. The adults feed on nectar and pollen as sources of energy and protein, respectively, and often hover over the plants they visit. , Eupeodes_fumipennis-female_hovering.jpg, ''E. fumipennis'' female hovering Eupeodes_volucris-female_hovering.jpg, ''E. volucris'' female hovering Description The aphideater flies are in length. The eyes have either no hairs, or rarely very short and sparse pile. The face is usually yellow, with a narrow but distinct brown median stripe. The scutum is usually shining black, but rarely slightly yellow pruinose laterally. The scutellum is dull yellow, translucent. The ventral scutellar fringe is complete and moderately dense. The pleura are black or grayish black, never yellow, u ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Dasysyrphus
''Dasysyrphus'' is a genus of hover flies with 50 identified species distributed worldwide (see distribution map). While the genus is relatively easy to identify, the differences between species have a more narrow range of variations. Therefore, identification of species by images of specimens alone should be made with care. (See available keys below) Larvae The known larvae are mostly tree dwelling on both conifers and deciduous trees. They feed on aphids and other small Hemiptera resting in the daytime. This nocturnal habit, plus the camouflage coloration of the larvae may account for the lack of larval reports for this genus. Syrphus Ribesii
''Syrphus ribesii'' is a very common Holarctic species of hoverfly. Its larvae feed on aphids. In common with many other species of hoverfly, males have the eyes meeting on the top of the head, whilst females have their eyes widely separated. Description Adults are very similar in appearance to '' Syrphus vitripennis'' and '' Syrphus torvus''. Females are distinguished from both by having entirely yellow hind femora, and from the latter by having no hairs present in their eyes. Males also have bare eyes, unlike ''S. torvus'', but are extremely similar to ''S. vitripennis'', differing only in having some black hairs present on the hind femur and in having the second basal cell of the wing entirely covered by microtrichia. The male genitalia and the larva have been described. Frons is posterior to the lunulae, shiny black. Sternites have lateral and median black marks. Male femora 3 is black for basal 2/3. Femora 3 is yellow. Lateral margins of tergites are black except at th ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
