Jacobite Syrian Christian Church
The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, also known as the Malankara Syriac Orthodox Church, Malankara Jacobite Syrian Church, or the Syriac Orthodox Church in India is an autonomous maphrianate of the Syriac Orthodox Church, Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch based in Kerala, India and a part of the Oriental Orthodox Churches. It is headed by the Catholicos of India, Baselios Joseph I, Mor Baselios Joseph, within the hierarchy of Syriac Orthodox Church. According to tradition, it was founded by Thomas the Apostle, Saint Thomas the Apostle. It is currently the only church in Malankara Church, Malankara that maintains the hierarchy of the Syriac Orthodox Church under the Holy See of Antioch. Old Syrian Church, Chengannur
Pazhaya Suriyani Pally a.k.a. Old Syrian Church, Chengannur is an ancient Syrian Christian church of Kerala. It is governed by a joint commission of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and the Mar Thoma Syrian Church. It is considered as one among the oldest still standing church buildings in Kerala and across India, that predates several centuries before the arrival of European Christianity in India. It is located at Chengannur, a major town along the MC Road, about 117 km north of the Kerala state capital Thiruvananthapuram and about 98 km south of Kochi. Mor Ignatius Jacob (Yaʿqub) III (October 12, 1913 – June 26, 1980) was the 121st Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and head of the Syriac Orthodox Church 1957–1980. He was skilled in and knowledgeable in Syriac sacral music or Beth Gazo. He re-established the Maphrianate/Catholicate in the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church (the Indian Church). Mor Yulios Elias Qoro (born Elias Mar Julius; 1 August 1881 – February 19, 1962) was a Syriac Orthodox Church bishop and the Patriarchal Delegate of India, Born as Elias Malke Qoro at Mardin on August 1, 1881, educated at school of the Church of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste. He joined Dayro d-Kurkmo (Mor Hananyo Monastery) in 1902, and became a monk on 16 June 1905. He was appointed secretary to Ignatius Abded Aloho II Patriarch of Antioch in 1906, and was ordained Qashisho in 1908. Baselios Shukrallah of Aleppo was the Maphriano of the East in the Syriac Orthodox Church from 1748 to 1760. He was the Metropolitan bishop, Metropolitan of Aleppo (1746-1748) before he became the Maphriayano of the East. Maphrian
The Maphrian ( or ''maphryono''), is the second-highest rank in the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the Syriac Orthodox Church, right below that of patriarch. The office of a maphrian is a maphrianate. There have been three maphrianates in the history of the Syriac Orthodox Church and one, briefly, in the Syriac Catholic Church. The first maphrianate, called the Maphrianate of the East or the Maphrianate of Tagrit, was established in 628 to give the Syriac Orthodox Church an ecclesiastical hierarchy in the Sasanian Empire and lands outside the control of the Roman Empire. The seat of the bishop was initially at Tagrit and he ranked second in the hierarchy after the Patriarch of Antioch.
