Synya Formation
The Synya (russian: Сыня) is a river in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Russia. The river is long — from the source of the Mokraya Synya at its head— and has a catchment area of . The Synya flows across the Shuryshkarsky District. It is navigable for , between its mouth in the Ob and Ovgort village. Course The Synya is a left tributary of the Ob river. It has its sources at the confluence of the long Sukhaya Synya and the long Mokraya Synya, which flow from the eastern slopes of the Polar Urals. The river flows initially southwards, then bends and flows eastwards, within a wide floodplain located at the northwestern end of the West Siberian Plain. Finally it meets the left bank of the Malaya Ob, an arm of the Ob, about from its mouth. ''Coregonus tugun'', the tugun, is a species freshwater whitefish from rivers draining to the Arctic Ocean. It is one of the several species of Siberian whitefishes, with a distribution encompassing rivers from the Ob in the west to the Yana River in the east. ''Coregonus'' is a diverse genus of fish in the salmon family ( Salmonidae). The ''Coregonus'' species are known as whitefishes. The genus contains at least 68 described extant taxa, but the true number of species is a matter of debate. The type species of the genus is '' Coregonus lavaretus''. Most ''Coregonus'' species inhabit lakes and rivers, and several species, including the Arctic cisco (''C. autumnalis''), the Bering cisco (''C. laurettae''), and the least cisco (''C. sardinella'') are anadromous, moving between salt water and fresh water. Dark silvery in colour, and like a herring in its shape, its distinctive features include a convex head, short gill rakers, and a mild overbite. The peled (''Coregonus peled''), also called the ''northern whitefish'', is a species of freshwater whitefish in the family Salmonidae. It is found in northern Europe and Asia. Arctic cisco (''Coregonus autumnalis''), also known as omul russian: Омуль, is an anadromous species of freshwater whitefish that inhabits the Arctic parts of Siberia, Alaska and Canada. It has a close freshwater relative in several lakes of Ireland, known as the pollan, alternatively regarded as conspecific with it, or as a distinct species. Taxonomy The freshwater omul of Lake Baikal, formerly considered a subspecies ''Coregonus autumnalis migratorius'' of the Arctic cisco, has no close genetic relationship to it and is now classified as a separate species, ''Coregonus migratorius''. The ''Great Soviet Encyclopedia'' (GSE; ) is one of the largest Russian-language encyclopedias, published in the Soviet Union from 1926 to 1990. After 2002, the encyclopedia's data was partially included into the later ''Bolshaya rossiyskaya entsiklopediya'' (or ''Great Russian Encyclopedia'') in an updated and revised form. The Polar Urals (russian: Полярный Урал) are a mountain range in the western part of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and the northeastern part of Komi, Russian Federation. The border between Europe and Asia runs along the main ridge of the Polar Urals.
