Sympetrum Baccha
''Sympetrum'' is a genus of small to medium-sized skimmer dragonflies, known as darters in the UK and as meadowhawks in North America. The more than 50 species predominantly live in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere; no ''Sympetrum'' species is native to Australia. Most North American darters fly in late summer and autumn, breeding in ponds and foraging over meadows. Commonly, they are yellow-gold as juveniles, with mature males and some females becoming bright red on part or all of their bodies. An exception to this color scheme is the black darter (''Sympetrum danae''). The red-veined darter or nomad (''Sympetrum fonscolombii'') is a dragonfly of the genus ''Sympetrum''. Taxonomy There is genetic and behavioural evidence that ''S. fonscolombii'' is not closely related to the other members of the genus ''Sympetrum'' and it will at some time in the future be removed from this genus. ''Sympetrum depressiusculum'', or, the spotted darter, is a dragonfly species from the family Libellulidae, distributed across temperate parts of Eurasia. Description Adults reach 29 to 34 mm in body length, of which 20–24 mm is abdomen. Males are distinguished by a flattened orange abdomen with a line of drop-shaped spots along each side and clubbed overall appearance - i.e. widest at the tip. They closely resemble males of the ruddy darter, which have more evenly flattened abdomen and noticeably darker pterostigmata. Adults fly in the late summer. They are weak fliers. Description The variegated meadowhawk is a small to medium-sized dragonfly with a slender abdomen, often reaching a length of 15/8" (41 mm) to 111/12" (49 mm).
