Sylvester Local News
The Sylvester Local News is a historic newspaper company in Sylvester, Worth County, Georgia. It is the oldest business in Worth County. The paper's brick building was constructed in the 1920s was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on August 21, 1980 as the Worth County Local Building. It is located at 118 North Isabella Street. The newspaper business was established in 1884 as the Sumner Free Trader. The paper later changed its name to the Worth County Local. It then became the Sylvester Local and it is now the Sylvester Local News. It houses a linotype machine and other printing equipment. The building is open to the public. The building is also a contributing building in the NRHP-listed Sylvester Commercial Historic District. In 2016 the entire archival collection of the newspaper was scanned and uploaded for public access by the Maragaret Jones Library of the Worth County Library System. Sylvester Commercial Historic District
Sylvester Commercial Historic District is a historic district in Sylvester, Georgia that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1987. It includes the Worth County Local Building which is separately NRHP-listed. Its boundaries were increased in 2002 to include some federally owned property. The expanded district included 65 contributing buildings and 16 noncontributing buildings. with Prominent resources within the district include: *Sylvester Banking Company (1910), which was Sylvester City Hall in 1987, 101 North Main Street. Sylvester is the county seat of Worth County, Georgia, United States. The population was 6,188 at the 2010 and at 5,865 (2019) census. The city is the county seat and business center of Worth County and is claimed to be the ''Peanut Capital of the World'' due to its peanut production. History Sylvester was platted in 1893. Worth County is a county located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,679. The county seat is Sylvester. Worth County is included in the Albany, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Worth County was created from Dooly and Irwin counties on December 20, 1853, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly, becoming Georgia's 106th county. The Linotype machine ( ) is a "line casting" machine used in printing; manufactured and sold by the former Mergenthaler Linotype Company and related It was a hot metal typesetting system that cast lines of metal type for individual uses. Linotype became one of the mainstay methods to set type, especially small-size body text, for newspapers, magazines, and posters from the late 19th century to the 1970s and 1980s, when it was largely replaced by phototypesetting and digital typesetting. The name of the machine comes from the fact that it produces an entire line of metal type at once, hence a ''line-o'-type''. The Worth County Library System is a public library system serving the county of Worth, Georgia, United States. There is one branch in the system, the Sylvester-Margaret Jones Library located in Sylvester. In 2016 the library archived the entire collection of the '' Sylvester Local News'' and made it available online for public access. Worth County Library is a member of PINES, a program of the Georgia Public Library Service that covers 53 library systems in 143 counties of Georgia.
