Sylhet Sadar () is an upazila of Sylhet District in the Division of Sylhet Division, Sylhet, Bangladesh. Geography Sylhet Sadar is located at . It has 158,233 households and a total area of 301.80 km2. The city of Sylhet is located within central of Sylhet Sadar. Demographics According to the 2011 Bangladesh census, 2011 Census of Bangladesh, Sylhet Sadar Upazila had 158,233 households and a population of 829,103. 185,388 (22.36%) were under 10 years of age. Sylhet Sadar had a literacy rate (age 7 and over) of 61.29%, compared to the national average of 51.8%, and a sex ratio of 899 females per 1000 males. 526,412 (63.49%) lived in urban areas. Sylhet District (), located in north-east Bangladesh, is one of the four districts in Sylhet Division, which contains Sylhet, the regional capital. History Sylhet District was established on 3 January 1782, and until 1878 it was part of Bengal Province under Dhaka Division. However, in that year, Sylhet was moved to the newly created Assam Province, and it remained as part of Assam up to 1947 (except during the administrative reorganisation of Bengal Presidency, Bengal Province between 1905 and 1912). Sylhet District was divided into five subdivisions and the current Sylhet District was known as the North Sylhet subdivision. Sylhet Division () is a northeastern Divisions of Bangladesh, division of Bangladesh, renowned for its lush tea gardens, rolling hills and vibrant cultural heritage. Sylheti nationalism (, ) is a cultural and social movement to assert an exclusive Sylheti identity rooted in the language, history and culture of Sylhet. Sylheti nationalism has developed in different forms over time under British colonial rule and in East Pakistan, in independent Bangladesh, among Sylhetis in India and among diaspora communities in the West. The primary objective of the Sylheti nationalists is to be recognized and preserve the Sylheti culture and language. They claim that Sylheti is not a dialect of Bengali but its own language. The Sylheti language is undergoing a revival in Greater Sylhet and the diaspora, bringing with it great symbolic significance. Sylheti Nagari
Sylheti Nagri or Sylheti Nāgarī (, , ), known in classical manuscripts as Sylhet Nagri () as well as by many other names, is an Indic script. The script was historically used in the regions of Bengal and Assam, that were east of the Padma. It was primarily used in the eastern part of the Sylhet region, to document poetry known as '' puthis''. In the course of the twentieth century, it has lost much ground to the standardised Eastern Nagari script. Printing presses for Sylheti Nagri existed as late as into the 1970s, and in the 2000s, the script was added to the Unicode Basic Multilingual Plane ( BMP).
