Sydney Uni Water Polo Club
Sydney Uni Lions is an Australian club water polo team that competes in the National Water Polo League. They have a men's team and a women's team and are based in Sydney. General information The club's colours are blue and gold, and their major sponsor is Sydney University Sports Union. The team's home pool is the Peter Montgomery Pool at the Sydney University Sports Centre. Men's team , the men's team was coached by Damian Fanning and included Australia men's national water polo team member Thomas Whalan. Women's team , the team was coached by Ian Trent while Leanne McKee served as the club's manager. Members of the 2011 club who had experience as a members of the Australia women's national water polo team included Elysha O'Neill, Hannah Buckling, Joanne Whitehorn, Keesja Gofers and Alicia Brightwell. Australian National Water Polo League
The Australian Water Polo League is the premier Australian domestic water polo competition. The men's league began in 1990 and the women's league started in 2004. Ten clubs compete in the league, each fielding a women's and a men's team. As of 2021 five clubs are based in Sydney and one each in Adelaide, Brisbane, Fremantle, Newcastle and Perth. The first history of the sport in Australia was launched in February 2009, under the title 'Water Warriors: Chronicle of Australian Water Polo', by Dr. Tracy Rockwell. The 592-page publication features over 1,300 images and is an in-depth reference on water polo in Australia from its first match in 1879 to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Keesja Gofers
Keesja Gofers (born 16 March 1990) is an Australian water polo player. Gofers won the silver medal at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, Spain, and the bronze medal at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. She competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In the 2020 Olympics, the Australian Stingers went through to the quarterfinals by finishing second in their pool. They were beaten 8-9 by Russia and therefore did not compete for an Olympic medal. Hannah Buckling (born 3 June 1992 in Sydney, Australia) is an Australian water polo centre back. She attended the Wenona Girls School and is currently attending the University of Sydney while working on a Bachelor of Science. She started playing water polo as a twelve-year-old. She played club water polo for the Sydney Northern Beaches Breakers and as a junior player represented New South Wales in national competitions and Australia in international competitions. She plays for the Sydney Uni Lions in the National Water Polo League. As s representative of Australia on the junior and senior level, she had her first international cap during the 2008 Australian Junior Tour at the Pythia Cup. She was a member of the Australian side that finished third at the 2011 FINA Junior World Championships.
