Sydney Herbert Stewart Thompson (September 23, 1920 – November 26, 1997) was a merchant and served as a Social Credit Party of Canada Member of Parliament from 1957 to 1958. Edmonton Strathcona (formerly known as Edmonton—Strathcona) is a federal electoral district in Alberta, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1953. It spans the south-central part of the city of Edmonton. In the periods 2008–2015 and 2019-2021, during the 40th, 41st, and 43rd Canadian Parliaments, Edmonton Strathcona was the only federal riding in Alberta not represented by the Conservative Party. Geography The riding is home to most of Edmonton's francophones. Richmond Francis Hanna
Richmond Francis Lionel Hanna (26 February 1913 – 17 January 1985) was an insurance salesman, a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force, a member of Edmonton Municipal Council and served as a Canadian federal politician from 1953 to 1957. Born in Monaghan, Ireland, Hanna first ran for a seat in the House of Commons of Canada in the 1953 Canadian federal election. He defeated former Member of Parliament Orvis A. Kennedy to win the new riding of Edmonton—Strathcona. Kennedy would run for re-election in the 1957 Canadian federal election and be defeated by Social Credit candidate Sydney Herbert Thompson. Terry Nugent
Terence James Nugent (December 9, 1920 – April 13, 2006) was a barrister, lawyer and World War II era soldier. He was also a Canadian federal politician from 1958 to 1968 and an alderman in the city of Edmonton, Alberta from 1968 to 1971. Born in Taber, Alberta, Nugent enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1942. He served in World War II and left the army in 1946. He first ran as a Progressive Conservative for a House of Commons of Canada seat in the Edmonton—Strathcona district for the 1957 federal election. He was defeated by Social Credit candidate Sydney Thompson and finished third out of fourth place behind defeated incumbent Member of Parliament Richmond Hanna. The 1957 Canadian federal election was held June 10, 1957, to select the 265 members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 23rd Parliament of Canada. In one of the greatest upsets in Canadian political history, the Progressive Conservative Party (also known as "PCs" or "Tories"), led by John Diefenbaker, brought an end to 22 years of Liberal rule, as the Tories were able to form a minority government despite losing the popular vote to the Liberals. The Liberal Party had governed Canada since 1935, winning five consecutive elections.
