Sydney Cup
The Sydney Cup is an Australian Turf Club Group 1 Thoroughbred handicap horse race, for horses three years old and older, run over 3200 metres at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia in the autumn during the ATC Championships series and it is the longest race in the club. Total prize money is A$2,000,000. The origins of this race are associated with colonial Sydney and the growth of thoroughbred racing in the colony during the 1850s. The Australian Jockey Club initiated an Autumn race meet of initially two days and expanded it as horse racing became the most attended sport meeting. Name The inaugural running of the race was 1 May 1862 as part of the Metropolitan Autumn Meeting at Randwick. The race was known as Jockey Club Handicap and it was the third race on the card. Rogilla
Rogilla was a chestnut Australian thoroughbred gelding, who was a versatile racehorse performing in Australia. Known as the ''Coalfields Champion'' from Newcastle, Rogilla raced during a vintage era of the Australian turf. He won in each of the six seasons that he raced as a three-year-old to an eight-year-old. Rogilla was an outstanding galloper in Sydney and Melbourne on wet or dry tracks recording 26 wins from 4½ furlongs to 2 miles with regular jockey Darby Munro winning 16 races. Breeding He was by Roger de Busli (GB) and his dam Speargila was by Brakespear (GB). Roger de Busli (GB) won three races from 20 starts in England. He commenced stud duties in 1925, but sired only one other winner of a principal race in Oro 1935 AJC Metropolitan Handicap. Sailor's Guide
Sailor's Guide was an outstanding Thoroughbred racehorse that was conceived in England and foaled in Australia. He is notable in that he won races in the United States, Canada, and a number of principal Australian races, and was a high stakes earner. He was a brown stallion that was foaled in 1952 at Sledmere Stud Scone and was sired by the good racehorse Lighthouse II. His dam was the imported mare Jehane (GB) by Legend of France (FR) imported by Maurice Point owner of Sledmere Stud. Jehane was also the dam of several other winners including Far Away Places (by Royal Empire) who won the SAJC Adelaide Cup. In 2021 he was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Straight Draw
Straight Draw (foaled 1952) was a New Zealand bred thoroughbred racehorse, that is most notable for winning the 1957 Melbourne Cup. Background Straight Draw was bred by Little Avondale Stud in New Zealand. Racing career Straight Draw started at the odds of 13/2 in the 1957 Melbourne Cup. For some time the race favourite that year was the legendary Tulloch, however connections decided to not run him in the race. Under the guidance of Australian Racing Hall of Fame jockey Noel McGrowdie, Straight Draw won the race by a neck margin. His owner, Ezra Norton, a strictly private man, remained in Sydney rather than go and watch the race. The horse's trainer Jack Mitchell was sent to collect the Cup on his behalf, avoiding having to make a speech. Galilee (1963−1990) was New Zealand bred Thoroughbred racehorse who became one of the most successful racehorses in Australia.Pring, Peter; "Analysis of Champion Racehorses", The Thoroughbred Press, Sydney, 1977, Galilee was the first and is still the only horse to win the Caulfield, Melbourne and Sydney Cups in one season. Battle Heights
Battle Heights was a notable New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse. A son of Battle-Waggon from the mare Wuthering Heights, he was foaled in 1967 and was trained throughout his career by Tim Douglas. Battle Heights started in 115 races and raced until he was 10 years old when he was forced into retirement after breaking down in the 1977 VRC LKS Mackinnon Stakes. During his career, he raced and won in every season from the age of three until ten and was successful over distances ranging from 1,100m to 3,200m. He was also second to Rose Mellay in the 1974 Auckland Cup over 3200m. Battle Heights was later ridden by C.Walsh in the Cullinan spelling paddock in the Western Districts of Queensland. Caryl described the horse as still having that zest for racing, and misbehaved quite often. Good Lord
Good Lord was a New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse owned by Las Vegas lawyer Michael L. Hines (1920–1985). Background Foaled in 1971, and purchased for just $6,250 as a yearling, Good Lord was by Zamazaan out of Love in Bloom. Racing career He was a good staying racehorse winning two Wellington Cups and the Queen Elizabeth Cup in 1977 where the Queen herself presented the Cup. The first Wellington Cup in 1977 was a thrilling encounter when he beat the great race mare Show Gate. He raced under the name My Good Man in Australia and won the Sydney Cup in 1978. In 1979, on U.S. soil, Good Lord won the Eddie Read Stakes under the champion American jockey Bill Shoemaker, while trained by the late Charles E. Whittingham. Double Century (horse)
Named by Clarke Anthony Shields, 'Double Century was a notable Australian Thoroughbred race horse. A son of Century (AUS) from the mare Hello Love (AUS), he was foaled in 1975 and was trained throughout his career by Ron McDonell. Double Century was part owned by Clarke Anthony Shields and Ron McDonell. Racing record Double Century raced in each of his 2YO, 3YO and 4YO seasons but remarkable every one of his wins was recorded in his 3YO year. His best ‘win’ was the 1979 AJC Derby which he won by ¾ of a length in race record time but was subsequently demoted to second place following a protest. The race was awarded to the second placed horse, the champion Dulcify. He was also unlucky to encounter another champion in Kingston Town, running second to him in the 1980 Sydney Cup and Tancred Stakes.
