Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority
The Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority was an agency of the Government of New South Wales from 1970 to 1999. Its predecessor was the Sydney Cove Authority. It was established on 12 January 1970 under the ''Sydney Cove Redevelopment Act 1968'' to oversee redevelopment plans for the historic inner suburb of The Rocks. The redevelopment plans, drawn up by architect and town planner John Overall, would have seen large-scale demolitions within the historic district and the construction of large multi-storey tower blocks, with only a handful of historic buildings deemed to be particularly significant to be retained. They met with large-scale community opposition, including significant street protests (led by The Rocks Residents Group) and a two-year Green Ban from the Builders' Labourers Federation between 1971 and 1973. The Rocks, New South Wales
The Rocks is a suburb, tourist precinct, and historic area of Sydney's city centre. It is on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour, immediately north-west of the Sydney's CBD. Boundaries The formal boundaries of the suburb named The Rocks cover the western side of Sydney Cove east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge approaches. John Overall (architect)
Sir John Wallace Overall, (15 July 1913 – 2 September 2001) was an Australian Second World War veteran and architect. As inaugural Commissioner of the National Capital Development Commission from 1957 to 1972, he made a significant contribution to the development of Canberra. Early life Overall was born in Sydney, New South Wales, on 15 July 1913. He had humble beginnings and grew up with his sisters in a Masonic home in Sydney. He studied architecture at the Sydney Technical College in the 1920s. Second World War Overall served as an officer in the Second Australian Imperial Force during the Second World War, where he was awarded the Military Cross for "great courage, devotion and initiative" in 1941 for his service during the early Western Desert campaign in North Africa. A green ban is a form of strike action, usually taken by a trade union or other organised labour group, which is conducted for environmentalist or conservationist purposes. They mainly took place in Australia during the 1970s, led by the Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) and used to protect parkland, low-income housing and buildings with historical significance. At times, industrial action was used in relation to other issues, such as when a ' pink ban' was placed on Macquarie University due to the expulsion of Jeremy Fisher, a gay man, from student housing. Builders' Labourers Federation
The Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) was an Australian trade union that existed from 1911 until 1972, and from 1976 until 1986, when it was permanently deregistered in various Australian states by the federal Hawke Labor government and some state governments of the time. This occurred in the wake of a Royal Commission into corruption by the union. About the same time, BLF federal secretary Norm Gallagher was jailed for corrupt dealings after receiving bribes from building companies that he used to build a beach house. Social and economic justice The BLF fought successful campaigns which became known as the green bans against development projects which it viewed as harmful to the built and natural environment of Sydney and Melbourne.
