Sydney Bush Walkers Club
The Sydney Bush Walkers Club is a bushwalking club in Australia. Formed in 1927 by Myles Dunphy at the behest of the Mountain Trails Club, the group was originally called the Waratah Walking Club, but was renamed early on. Unlike its predecessor, the club was open to the general public, and this allowed it to increase its membership substantially; a petition presented in the same year (signed by members of both clubs) contained over 5,000 signatures. The Sydney Bush Walkers Club continued to campaign for environmental causes throughout the 1930s and although membership has fallen to around 800, it still continues to organise events. Myles And Milo Dunphy
Myles Dunphy and Milo Dunphy were Australian conservationists who played an important role in creating the Australian wilderness movement. Myles Dunphy Myles Joseph Dunphy OBE (1891-1985) was an Australian conservationist best known for the protection of parts of the Blue Mountains National Park. Biography Myles Dunphy lived in Oatley, a southern suburb of Sydney, and started his wilderness publicity work in 1910. He compiled detailed maps of a number of areas of conservation interest in New South Wales. His original maps of the Blue Mountains, in particular the Coxs River and Kowmung River catchments, featured imaginative and original naming systems. Throughout his life he campaigned for wilderness areas throughout New South Wales. The Mountain Trails Club of New South Wales was an Australian conservation and bushwalking group. The club was founded in 1914 by Myles Dunphy, Roy Rudder and Herbert Gallop Membership was by invitation only, and women were not permitted to join; the club espoused "a doctrine fmanly and wholesome recreation". Marie Byles
Marie Beuzeville Byles (8 April 1900 – 21 November 1979) was an Australian conservationist, pacifist, the first practising female solicitor in New South Wales (NSW), mountaineer, explorer and avid bushwalker, feminist, journalist, and an original member of the Buddhist Society in New South Wales. She was also a travel and non-fiction writer. Life The eldest of three children, Byles was born in 1900 in Ashton upon Mersey in what was then Cheshire, England, to progressive-minded parents. Her younger brothers were David John Byles and Baldur Unwin Byles (1904–1975). Her parents were Unitarian Universalists, Fabian socialists and pacifists. Her mother Ida Margaret, née Unwin, was a suffragette and had studied at The Slade School of Fine Art, until "her artistic talents were lost to the drudgery of housekeeping", and who impressed upon her daughter the necessity of being financially independent of men. Frank Austin "Paddy" Pallin (1900 – 3 January 1991) was an Australian pioneer bushwalking and camping equipment retailer. He is best known for the ''Paddy Pallin'' chain of outdoors equipment stores he founded. Biography Born in County Durham, England, in 1900, Pallin developed a love for the outdoors while on family picnics and Scout trips to the Yorkshire countryside. After he emigrated to Sydney, Australia, in 1926 he worked initially as a sharefarmer and then as an insurance clerk. He became an original member of the Sydney Bush Walkers Club which was founded in 1927 and then, becoming a victim of the great depression in 1930, he began making lightweight, waterproof outdoor equipment and clothing. His business soon began to pay for itself when people realised bushwalking was a cheap activity and no one else was making high quality bush equipment. Dorothy Butler (bushwalker)
Dorothy Butler (née English; 12 September 1911 – 21 February 2008) —better known as Dot Butler—was an Australian bushwalker, mountaineer and conservationist. Early life Dorothy English was born in Sydney, in the district of Ashfield, to parents Frank and Isadora English, in 1911. One of five children, she was an active child later recalling, “''all our childhood entertainment was climbing – brick kilns, chimneys, telegraph poles – anything off the horizontal, and always barefoot of course''”. She recounted that the 'prize' climb, for the English children, was the giant crane used to lift locomotives at the Chullora railway yards. Butler was a vegetarian in her youth but later admitted that she preferred to eat stuffed-grouse.
