A hypocorism ( or ; from Ancient Greek ; sometimes also ''hypocoristic''), or pet name, is a name used to show affection for a person. It may be a diminutive form of a person's name, such as ''Izzy'' for Isabel or ''Bob (given name), Bob'' for Robert, or it may be unrelated. Origins and usage Etymologically, the term ''hypocorism'' is from Ancient Greek (), from (), meaning 'to call by endearing names'. Frédéric Sy
Frédéric Sy (1861-1917) was a French astronomer and a discoverer of minor planets. He worked at the Paris Observatory from 1879 to 1887, and as the assistant astronomer at the Algiers Observatory, North Africa, from 1887 to 1918. While working in Algiers he published extensively on the subjects of minor asteroids and comets, and was a colleague of astronomer François Gonnessiat. Sy was responsible for the discovery and naming of two asteroids, 858 El Djezaïr and 859 Bouzaréah. The names were drawn from locations near the discovering Algiers Observatory. He was awarded the Valz Prize ''(Prix Valz)'' in 1919 by the French Academy of Sciences. The asteroid 1714 Sy was named after him in 1951. Sy Syms (May 12, 1926 – November 17, 2009) was an American businessperson, businessman, entrepreneur and philanthropist, who founded the SYMS department store#Off-price retailer, off-price clothing chain store, chain in New York City in 1959. Biography Syms was born Seymour Merinsky on May 12, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York. He was the youngest of eight children of Jewish parents who had emigrated from Russia. His family decided to change their surname from "Merinsky" to "Merns" when his father and elder brother George opened a store on Vesey Street in Lower Manhattan. Syms went to Midwood High School in Brooklyn. After serving in the United States Army, he attended New York University on the G.I. Bill. Sy Berger
Seymour Perry Berger (July 12, 1923 – December 14, 2014) was an employee of the Topps company for over 50 years. He is credited as being the co-designer of the 1952 Topps baseball series, as is regarded as "the father of modern baseball cards". Personal life Berger, who was Jewish, was born on July 12, 1923, on the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan, to Louis (a furrier) and Rebecca Berger. As a boy, he collected baseball cards, traded them and won some from friends by flipping for them. He served in the Army Air Forces in World War II and later graduated from Bucknell University with an accounting degree. While in college, Berger met Joel Shorin, son of Philip Shorin, one of the founders of Topps. Berger died on December 14, 2014, aged 91, at home in Rockville Centre, New York. Melvin James "Sy" Oliver (December 17, 1910 – May 28, 1988) was an American jazz arranger, trumpeter, composer, singer and bandleader. Life Sy Oliver was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, United States. His mother was a piano teacher, and his father was a multi-instrumentalist, who demonstrated saxophones at a time when instrument was seldom played other than by marching bands. Oliver left home at 17 to play with Zack Whyte and his Chocolate Beau Brummels and later with Alphonse Trent. He sang and played trumpet with these bands, becoming known for his "growling" horn playing. He also began arranging with them. Sy Gomberg (August 19, 1918 – February 11, 2001) was an American Oscar-nominated film screenwriter, producer, and activist, who taught screenwriting to University of Southern California students for over a decade. Gomberg was born in New York City, and grew up in Newark, New Jersey. He spent World War II in the First Motion Picture Unit in Hollywood.
