Billy Van
William Allan Van Evera (11 August 1934 – 8 January 2003), known by the stage name Billy Van, was a Canadian comedian, actor, and singer. Biography Van was born in Toronto, Ontario, and dropped out of Bloor Collegiate Institute in Grade 11 to pursue a career as an entertainer. Starting as a youth, he and his four brothers toured North America as a singing act called the Van Evera Brothers. After leaving his brothers and dropping "Evera" from his name, Van performed as a singer, leading the Billy Van Four and later the Billy Van Singers, and making frequent appearances on Canadian variety television shows such as ''Fancy Free''. The single "I Miss You" / "The Last Sunrise" by the Billy Van Four, released on the Rodeo International label, peaked at number 29 on the CHUM Chart in Toronto in March 1961. David Adams (dancer)
David Adams, (16 November 1928 – 24 October 2007) was a Canadian ballet dancer and a founding member of the National Ballet of Canada. Early career After his training under Gweneth Lloyd at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, David began his performing career with England's Metropolitan Ballet. Here he met Celia Franca, who would become the founding Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Canada. He also shared the stage with Eric Bruhn, Sonia Arova and John Taras, performing ''Design With Strings'', ''Dances from Galanta'' and other works in a tour of Scandinavia. Joey Hollingsworth
Joey Hollingsworth is a Black Canadian tap dancer, singer, and conga player who has performed on stage and screen throughout the world. He appeared regularly on Canadian television shows from the 1950s through the 1970s. Hollingsworth, an adoptee, began dancing at the age of three, and turned professional at age five. Hollingsworth was listed as being 10 years old when he was Page One news in The Free Press on Nov. 23, 1946. The story told of his backstage meeting with dance legend Bill (Bojangles) Robinson the previous night (Nov. 22, 1946) at the old London Arena (since demolished). "Let's see you do a little step," Robinson told the youngster. "Say, son, that's great. Where did you learn that?" Robinson said after the young Joey offered a few steps. Nina Simone
Eunice Kathleen Waymon (February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003), known professionally as Nina Simone (), was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and civil rights activist. Her music spanned styles including classical, folk, gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, and pop. The sixth of eight children born from a poor family in Tryon, North Carolina, Simone initially aspired to be a concert pianist. With the help of a few supporters in her hometown, she enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. Lois Smith (dancer)
Lois Irene Smith (8 October 1929 – 22 January 2011) was a Canadian ballet dancer and dance teacher. Smith was born in Vancouver in 1929. She began her dance training at the British Columbia School of Ballet, and later studied with Rosemary Deveson and Mara McBirney in Vancouver. She married fellow dancer David Adams (1928–2007) in 1950. The couple had one daughter, Janine, and separated during the 1960s. In 1951, she joined the National Ballet of Canada as the company's initial prima ballerina. Following an injury, she left the National Ballet to form her own dance school in 1969. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada on 23 June 1980 and invested in October 1980. Smith died at Sechelt, British Columbia in 2011, aged 81, from a deteriorating illness.
