Swimming At The 1998 Goodwill Games
The swimming competition at the 1998 Goodwill Games was held in New York City, New York, USA from 28 July to 2 August. The format is a team competition.The men's teams are the United States, China, Germany and a World All-Star team and the women's teams are the United States, Russia, Germany and a World All-Star team. Each men and women’s team competes in a round-robin, dual meet format of 14 events for a total of three dual meets per team. Team accumulates points based upon placement of its entries. Individual event medals are also awarded based upon the overall fastest times in all the competition. 1998 Goodwill Games
The 1998 Goodwill Games was the fourth edition of the international sports competition the Goodwill Games, which were created by Ted Turner in reaction to the political troubles surrounding the Olympic Games of the 1980s. The competition was held in and around New York City in the United States from July 19 to August 2, 1998. Approximately 1,500 athletes from more of 60 countries participated, competing in 15 sports. The United States won the games with 41 gold medals and 132 medals in total. In second place was Russia, with 35 gold medals and 94 medals in total. Cuba finished in third place, with 8 gold medals and 17 medals in total. Denys Sylantyev
Denys Olegovich Sylantyev ( uk, Денис Олегович Силантьєв; born 3 October 1976) is a Ukrainian politician and retired swimmer. He competed at four consecutive Olympics between 1996 and 2008 and who won a silver medal in the 200 m butterfly in 2000. At the next Olympics he was the flag bearer for Ukraine. He won the Mare Nostrum circuit three times: 2000, 2001 and 2002. In 1998 he was named European Swimmer of the Year. Sylantyev retired from competitions shortly after the 2008 Olympics and focused on politics and development of sport in Ukraine. In the 2012 Ukrainian parliamentary election, Silantyev was a self-nominated candidate in constituency No.217 situated in Kyiv's Obolon District but he did not win a parliamentary seat. He lost this election to Oleksandr Bryhynets of Batkivshchyna who gained 31.75% of the votes while Silantyev gained 5.18% and fourth place. Roman Yegorov (russian: Роман Егоров; born 25 January 1974) is a former Russian freestyle swimmer. Curtis Myden
Curtis Allen Myden (born December 31, 1973) is a former breaststroke and medley swimmer from Canada, who competed at three consecutive Summer Olympics in 1992, 1996 and 2000. He won a total number of three medals at the Olympics, all of them bronze. Myden was one of Canada's leading swimmers in the 1990s. He was coached by Canadian coach Deryk Snelling. Patrick Fowler
Trooper Patrick Fowler (died 1964, aged 90), from Dublin, was a member of a cavalry regiment of the British Army, the 11th Hussars (Prince Albert's Own) who served during World War I. During an advance, Fowler was cut off from his regiment, and after surviving alone in the woods for five months, was hidden by French civilians living in territory occupied by the German Army. He is therefore notable for spending most of The Great War hiding in a wardrobe. He managed to survive the war and moved to Scotland after leaving the army. World War I On 26 August 1914, Fowler took part in the Battle of Le Cateau, but he was cut off from his regiment during a German advance. Kurt Grote
Kurt David Grote (born August 3, 1973) is an American former competition swimmer and Olympic gold medalist. Grote competed internationally in the breaststroke events during the 1990s. Grote did not start swimming until the age of fifteen. He began swimming under the advice of a doctor to improve his asthma condition. He attended Stanford University, where he was a member of the Stanford Cardinal swimming and diving team. He also trained with and competed for the Santa Clara Swim Club. After his swimming career, he married a woman named Amy and completed his MD at Stanford. He has gone on to become a partner in McKinsey & Company's Healthcare Payor and Provider practice. Grote competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. He finished sixth in the men's 100-meter breaststroke, eighth in the 200-meter breaststroke, and won a gold medal as a member of the winning U.S. team in the men's 4×100-meter medley relay.
