''Sweeten the Distance'' is the tenth studio album by American singer-songwriter Neal Casal, released on November 14, 2011, on Fargo Records. Produced by Thom Monahan, the album is Casal's first since the break-up of The Cardinals in 2009, and features contributions from former bandmate Jon Graboff throughout. Background and recording ''Sweeten the Distance'' was recorded over six months at The Hangar, Sacramento with producer Thom Monahan. Regarding the sessions, Casal stated, "It could have gone faster, but Thom and I wanted to take our time and really get everything right. I'm not into making records quickly anymore, I like to work slowly and make sure they're fully realized." Writing and composition The track, "White Fence Round House", was written following a near-death experience while surfing. Casal noted, "I think that ongis one of the strongest I've ever written. Thom Monahan is an American producer/engineer and musician who is best known for his work with the bands Pernice Brothers, Fruit Bats and Vetiver. He has also produced albums by Devendra Banhart, Wild Nothing, Beachwood Sparks, and the Chris Robinson Brotherhood. Biography Thom Monahan was the bassist and singer of Connecticut indie-rock band Monsterland from 1991 to 1994, the bassist for Lilys from 1995 to 1998, and a member of the Pernice Brothers from 1998 to 2005. He began his recording career in 1995 with the Scud Mountain Boys' debut album, ''Dance The Night Away''. The Cardinals were an American R&B group of the 1950s. Sharing a legacy with the Orioles, The Cardinals are remembered as one of the best R&B ballad acts to come out of Baltimore. Origins The Cardinals’ career began in 1946 (one year before The Orioles) when Leon Hardy and Meredith Brothers convinced Donald Johnson to join them in harmony on the corner of Gay Street and Forest. Johnson drafted his friend Ernie Warren to round out a quartet and the new group on the block became The Mellotones. They did the usual round of Baltimore bars and nightclubs for experience, singing the songs of black and white pop groups such as The Fortunes, The Ink Spots, and The Ames Brothers.
