Sweep (puppet)
Sweep is a British puppet and television character popular in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and other countries. Sweep is a grey glove puppet dog with long black ears who joined ''The Sooty Show'' in 1957, as a friend to fellow puppet Sooty. He is a dim-witted dog with a penchant for bones and sausages. Sweep is notable for his method of communication which consists of a loud high-pitched squeak that gains its inflection from normal speech and its rhythm from the syllables in each word. The rest of the cast, namely Soo and the presenter, could understand Sweep perfectly, and would (albeit indirectly) translate for the viewer. The sound of Sweep's voice was achieved using "something similar to a saxophone reed". Versions of the puppet later sold as toys had an integral squeaker connected to an air bulb that was squeezed by hand. Saxophone
The saxophone (often referred to colloquially as the sax) is a type of single-reed woodwind instrument with a conical body, usually made of brass. Sooty (2001 TV Series)
''Sooty'' is a British children's television series, created and presented by Richard Cadell, and premiered on CITV on 5 November 2001, running for three series. The programme is the fourth programme in the franchise of the same name, and replaced '' Sooty Heights'', with Cadell supported by co-presenter Vicki Lee Taylor, and Brenda Longman during the first series, and Sheila Clark for the remaining series. The programme focuses on the exploits of the titular character and his puppet friends in their running of the hotel, and features many elements used in previous programmes. Francis Wright (actor)
Francis Wright (born 1958) is an English voice actor, puppeteer, and television presenter. He also teaches public speaking and communication skills. Early life Wright was born in St John's Wood, the son of Dr Bedřich Bělohlávek and Joan Wright, and was registered under both names. His father was a Czech bookseller working in London, while his mother was a journalist then working for the BBC as a publicity officer, and both were authors. Wright was educated at Colet Court and St Paul's School, London, then studied drama, graduating with honours. Sooty's Amazing Adventures
''Sooty's Amazing Adventures'' is an animated spin off series of the ''Sooty'' franchise which aired from 1997 to 1998. In this incarnation, he is a fully bodied bear free from the puppeteer's hand. Setting and location The gang live in the Fanshawe Theatre in an unknown English coastal town. The four embark on their adventures through a trapdoor located on the theatre's main stage which would take them to various places and times. However more often than not the trapdoor fails to send them to their desired location. Main characters Sooty - A quiet and smart bear who is the undisputed leader of the gang. Sooty is the only character in the show that does not talk (yet sometimes makes a rattling noise when he either nods or shakes his head). Robert Rackstraw (born 31 October 1965) is an English voice actor who has worked in various animated films, television shows and video games. Early life Rackstraw grew up in the Sunderland suburb of New Silksworth, and attended Southmoor Comprehensive. His voice acting career began with a chance meeting with a local radio presenter, when he began writing scripts for radio adverts, and later voicing them. He said in 2013: “I thought it was daft that these guys get paid a lot more FOR reading than I was FOR writing. So I started augmenting my income by writing ridiculous things and accents into my scripts that no one else could do but me. I eventually got a show reel together and I started sending it all over the country." ''Sooty Heights'' is a British children's television series, created and presented by Richard Cadell, co-stars Liana Bridges and Brenda Longman, produced by Granada Television, and aired on the CITV block of ITV from 27 September 1999 to 11 December 2000. It is the successor to the children's series ''Sooty & Co'' and the first programme to feature Cadell as Sooty's right-hand man (and subsequent owner), following the retirement of Matthew Corbett in 1998.
