Charles Sweeny
Charles Michael Sweeny (January 26, 1882 – February 27, 1963) was an American soldier of fortune, United States Army lieutenant colonel, French Foreign Legion officer, Polish army brigadier general, Royal Air Force (RAF) group captain, and journalist who fought in numerous conflicts in the 20th century. He recruited fellow Americans to fight in World War II prior to the United States entering the war. Early life and family He was born in San Francisco to Charles and Emeline Sweeny. Charles Sr. was the son of poor Irish immigrants, but made his fortune in mining in the region around Coeur d'Alene, Idaho (see Bunker Hill Mine and Smelting Complex). Charles Francis Sweeny (October 3, 1909, Scranton, Pennsylvania – March 11, 1993) was an American businessman and socialite who played a major role in the formation of the Eagle Squadrons, composed mostly of volunteer American pilots eager to fight in the Royal Air Force prior to the United States entering into World War II. Early life and family Sweeny's paternal grandfather, also named Charles Sweeny, was an Irish immigrant who made his fortune in mining in the Coeur d'Alene region in Idaho. His father, Robert, was a successful lawyer in Los Angeles, before moving to New York City in 1916 to pursue business opportunities and enlarge the family fortune. Thomas William Sweeny
Thomas William Sweeny (December 25, 1820 – April 10, 1892) was an Irish-American soldier who served in the Mexican–American War and then was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Birth and early years Sweeny was born in Cork, Ireland, on Christmas Day, 1820. He immigrated to the United States in 1833. In 1846, he enlisted as a second lieutenant in the 2nd New York Volunteers, and fought under General Winfield Scott in Mexico. Sweeny was wounded in the groin at the Battle of Cerro Gordo, and his right arm was so badly injured at the Battle of Churubusco that it had to be amputated. For his heroics, his fellow servicemen nicknamed him "Fighting Tom". Despite this possibly career-ending injury, he continued serving with the 2nd US Infantry until the outbreak of the Civil War. Glynis Sweeny (born 1962) is an American illustrator and caricaturist who is known for lampooning political and business figures in newspapers, newsweeklies, and consumer magazines. Sweeny graduated with a degree in graphic design from Rochester Institute of Technology. She later honed her illustrating skills under the direction of the iconic Alan E. Cober at University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. Soon after, Sweeny became a staff designer and illustrator for ''The Detroit News'', working alongside other notable illustrators like Don Asmussen. George Sweeny
George Sweeny (February 22, 1796 – October 10, 1877) was a United States House of Representatives, U.S. Representative from Ohio. Born near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Sweeny was a graduate of Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. A lawyer, he was Admission to the bar in the United States, admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Gettysburg in 1820, moving to Bucyrus, Ohio, in 1830. He served as prosecuting attorney of Crawford County, Ohio, Crawford County in 1838. Sweeny was elected as a Democratic Party (United States), Democrat to the 26th United States Congress, Twenty-sixth and 27th United States Congress, Twenty-seventh Congresses (March 4, 1839 – March 3, 1843). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1842, and returned to the practice of law in Ohio, including another term as prosecutor in Crawford County. He died in Bucyrus, Ohio, October 10, 1877.
