Swedish Defense Research Agency
The Swedish Defence Research Agency (, FOI; literal translation: ''Total Defence Research Institute'') is a government agency in Sweden for total defence research and development. FOI has its headquarters in Kista (Stockholm). Other FOI offices or research centres are located in Grindsjön, Linköping, and Umeå. History FOI was created in 2001 by combining the Swedish National Defence Research Institute (FOA) with the National Aeronautical Research Institute (FFA). The first of these agencies, FFA, had been created in 1940 in Bromma, Stockholm as a governmental research institute for the Swedish aviation industry, large parts of which were devoted to military aircraft. Military Physics Institute
Military Physics Institute (, MFI) was a Swedish research institution established in 1941 to 1945. It was amalgamated into the Swedish National Defence Research Institute in 1945. History The initiative for the establishment of the Military Physics Institute was taken in 1939 when the leaders of the country's physical institutions joined forces to make more effective use of the physical research results for military purposes. The Military Physics Institute was established in 1940 by the Swedish National Committee for Physics (''Svenska nationalkommitten för fysik'') and the year after state funding for the operation was applied. Research within the Military Physics Institute focused on the development of new weapons of defense. These include surveys of the military use of infrared radiation as well as the problems of shaped charge. Swedish Nuclear Weapon Program
After World War II, Sweden considered building nuclear weapons to defend themselves against an offensive assault from the Soviet Union. From 1945 to 1972 the government ran a clandestine nuclear weapons program under the guise of civilian defence research at the Swedish National Defence Research Institute (FOA). By the late 1950s the work had reached the point where underground testing was feasible. However, at this time the Riksdag prohibited research and development of nuclear weapons, pledging that research should be done only for the purpose of defence against nuclear attack.
