Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing
The Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing ( sv, Försvarsmaktens helikopterflottilj, Hkpflj) organizes all Swedish Armed Forces military helicopter operations. The unit was formed in 1998 by merging the Army, Air Force and Navy helicopter resources. The unit is located in three places in Sweden, with headquarters at Malmen Airbase in Linköping. History The unit was formed on 1 January 1998. The Air Force, Army and Navy no longer had their own helicopters but were part of the Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing as an asset for all service branches. Sweden was the first in the world to introduce this type of organisation. From the beginning, the unit was directly subordinate to the Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters. Blekinge Wing ( sv, Blekinge flygflottilj), also F 17 Kallinge, or simply F 17, is a Swedish Air Force wing with the main base located near Ronneby in southern Sweden. It is one of the three remaining wings in Sweden and currently has two squadrons of multirole aircraft. F 17 in the south and F 21 in the north are the two wings remaining to have operational squadrons. F 7 is a school where pilots begin their training in the JAS 39 Gripen. After that the pilot's training is moved out to the two operational wings there they learn their final skills. History F 17 was established on the Bredåkra moor in 1944 under the name of Kungliga Blekinge Flygflottilj, ''The Royal Blekinge Air Wing''. Jämtland Wing
Jämtland Wing ( sv, Jämtlands flygflottilj), also F 4 Frösön, or simply F 4, is a former Swedish Air Force wing with the main base located at Åre Östersund Airport outside Östersund on Frösön in the middle of Sweden. History The airbase was set up in 1926 as the 4th Air Corps at the old base of Jämtland Ranger Regiment at ''Frösö läger'' (Frösö camp). The main task was to perform reconnaissance for army units. In 1930, the duties were extended to bombing with B 4 and later B 5 planes. In 1936, the Flying Corps was reorganized as an own branch (the Air Force) and the unit was renamed Jämtlands Flygflottilj (Jämtland Wing). In 1947, the wing was yet again redesigned as a fighter wing and received surplus P-51 Mustangs designated as J 26. These were only kept for five years until they were replaced by J 28A jets in 1952. Boden (, outdatedly ) is a locality and the seat of Boden Municipality in Norrbotten County, Sweden with 16,847 inhabitants in 2018. It is part of the larger area around coastal city Luleå some southeast. After Kiruna, it is the second largest town in Northern Sweden's interior.
