Swedish American Of The Year
Swedish American of the Year (SAY)/ is an annual award program of the Vasa Order of America which is run by the two Sweden District Lodges – District 19 and District 20. Origin Since 1960, the Vasa Order of America has selected a prominent American citizen of Swedish birth or descent to become Swedish-American of the Year. Every year the two Sweden District Lodges of the Vasa Order of America select an American of Swedish descent to be The Swedish-American of the Year. The program ceased in 2020 but could be revivied with enthusiasm and networking of Swedish American organizations. Swedish American of the Year Awards The Swedish-American of the Year is honored during Sweden-America Days in various places in Sweden. A tablet containing the names of all award recipients is kept in the Swedish Emigrant Institute (Swedish: ) in Växjö, Småland, Sweden. The California Digital Newspaper Collection (CDNC) is a freely-available, archive of digitized California newspapers; it is accessible through the project's website. The collection contains over six million pages from over forty-two million articles. The project is part of the Center for Bibliographical Studies and Research (CBSR) at the University of California Riverside. History The Center for Bibliographical Studies and Research was one of six initial participants in the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), a newspaper digitization project established from a partnership between the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Between 2005 and 2011, the CBSR received three two-year grants, and contributed around 300,000 pages to Chronicling America, the public face of the NDNP. Curtis Leroy Carlson (July 9, 1914 – February 19, 1999) was an American businessman and founder of Carlson and Radisson Hotel Group. Carlson developed a popular trading stamp consumer loyalty program for grocery stores in the United States. Early life and education Carlson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Charles and Leatha Carlson. Nils Yngve Wessell (April 14, 1914 – March 4, 2007) was an American psychologist and the eighth president of Tufts University from 1953 to 1966, overseeing its transformation from a small liberal arts college to an internationally known research university. Richfield Oil Corporation was an American petroleum company based in California from 1911 to 1966. In 1966, it merged with Atlantic Refining Company to form the Atlantic Richfield Company (later renamed ARCO). Robert Orville Anderson (April 12, 1917 – December 2, 2007) was an American businessman, art collector, and philanthropist who founded Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO). Anderson also supported several cultural organizations, from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to ''Harper's Magazine''. He died December 2, 2007, at his home in Roswell, New Mexico. The origin is the shipping company Nordstjernan, which was founded in 1890.
