Swanlinbar GAA
Swanlinbar St Mary's is a Gaelic football club based in Swanlinbar, County Cavan, Ireland. History The club was founded in 1904. The club won their first championship title in 1985, winning the Cavan Junior Football Championship, winning it again in 1998 and 2006. After losing the junior final in 2009, Swad came back in 2010 to win the championship for the fourth time. Swanlinbar went on to reach the final of Ulster Junior Club Football Championship, but Corduff won the match by five points. However, Corduff played an ineligible player and after a successful appeal, Swanlinbar were crowned Ulster Junior champions. The club would go on to beat Ballinabrackey in the All-Ireland semi final to qualify for the final of the All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship. Swanlinbar faced Kerry club St Mary's in the final at Croke Park on 12 February 2011. The match was level at half-time, but St Mary's went on to win the match by 3–13 to 1–5. Swanlinbar
Swanlinbar () is a small village on the N87 national secondary road in north-west County Cavan, Ireland, close to the Cladagh river and near the Fermanagh border. The village is situated in the townlands of Furnaceland and Hawkswood, in the civil parish of Kinawley, in the barony of Tullyhaw. In the 1860s, Swanlinbar had the most celebrated of Cavan's numerous mineral springs. History The earliest name recorded for the village was ''Sra'-na-muck'', which means "The River-field of the pigs". The current official Irish name , meaning "Iron Mill", reflects the foundation of an ironworks in the town in 1700 as does "Swanlinbar", which derives from the four entrepreneurs who built the iron foundry. Owen Roe McGovern
Owen Roe McGovern (December 1917 – 2 May 2011) was a former Gaelic footballer who played for the Cavan county team, winning two All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals in 1947 and '48. Playing career A native of Swanlinbar, he could play at corner-back or half-back. He was a member of the great Cavan squad which won the All-Ireland Final in the Polo Grounds, New York City in 1947. In the 1948 All-Ireland title success Owen Roe replaced John Joe O'Reilly as a second-half substitute in defence. The following year he started at left corner-back in the Final, but Meath denied Cavan the three in a row. He was a member of the Cavan squad when they won their first National Football League title in the 1947/48 season and he lined out at right half-back when Cavan reclaimed the National Football League title in 1949/50. Gearóid McKiernan
Gearóid McKiernan (born 17 September 1990) is an Irish Gaelic footballer who plays for the Cavan county team. He plays with the Cavan Gaels club, and formerly with his home club Swanlinbar. Playing career Club Swanlinbar McKiernan joined the Swanlinbar club at a young age and played at all grades underage. McKiernan was on the Swanlinbar team in 2006 that won the Cavan Junior Football Championship. Swanlinbar reached the Junior final again in 2009, but were beaten by Butlersbridge. The following year Swanlinbar were back in the Junior Final, where they faced 2006 runners-up Munterconnaught. McKiernan won his second Junior Championship medal and was named man of the match in the final. Croke Park ( ga, Páirc an Chrócaigh, ) is a Gaelic games stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Named after Archbishop Thomas Croke, it is referred to as Croker by GAA fans and locals. It serves as both the principal national stadium of Ireland and headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The Kerry County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), or Kerry GAA, is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland. It is responsible for Gaelic games in County Kerry, and for the Kerry county teams. The Kerry branch of the Gaelic Athletic Association was founded in the year 1888. Football is the dominant sport in the county, with both the men's and women's teams among the strongest in the country at senior level. All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship
The All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship is a Gaelic football competition which began in 2002 and is played by the junior club champions of each county. Prior to that a number of unofficial competitions were held. The winners of each county's junior football championship compete in four provincial championships. The four provincial winners compete in the All Ireland. Ardfert, a club from Kerry, made history when they won the All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship in 2006 and then won the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Football Championship in 2007. Kerry clubs have enjoyed the most success, with ten clubs winning the All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship since its official inauguration in 2004. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Ulster Junior Club Football Championship
The Ulster Junior Club Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football tournament played between the hundreds of junior football clubs in Ulster. There are nine county championships between the nine counties of Ulster. The nine winners go on to play each other in the Ulster Club Championship in a knock-out format.
