Svēte Manor
Svēte Manor () is a manor house in the Svēte Parish of Jelgava Municipality, in the historical region of Semigallia, in Latvia. History The manor was originally built around 1730, and extensively remodeled with new columns between 1774 and 1775 by architect Severin Jensen for use as a summer vacation residence by Duke Peter von Biron. The building was part of an army base between 1870 and 1993. It was further remodeled between 1876 and 1878 for military use. From 1993 until 2018 the building had several owners but its condition slowly worsened. In 2018 the manor building became the property of a local family who started restoration works. Jelgava Municipality
Jelgava Municipality () is a Administrative divisions of Latvia, municipality in Zemgale, Latvia. Its administrative center is Jelgava, although it is extraterritorial as the city is a separate municipality of its own. Semigallia
Semigallia is one of the Historical Latvian Lands located to the south of the Daugava and to the north of the Saule region of Samogitia. The territory is split between Latvia and Lithuania, previously inhabited by the Semigallian Baltic tribe. They are noted for their long resistance (1219–1290) against the German crusaders and Teutonic Knights during the Northern Crusades. Semigallians had close linguistic and cultural ties with Samogitians. Name The name of Semigallia appears in sources such as ''Seimgala'', ''Zimgola'' and ''Sem'' 'e'''gallen''. The -gal element means 'border' or 'end', while the first syllable corresponds to ''ziem'' ('north'). Severin Jensen
Severin Jensen (1723 – after 1809) was a Danish architect who worked mainly in the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. In 1772 he became a chief architect of Duke Peter von Biron, and in 1795 the chief architect of the Courland Governorate. Biography Severin Sören Jensen was born in 1723 in Copenhagen, Kingdom of Denmark. There are no reliable sources about his early life or education. In 1766 Jensen arrived in the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia and was hired as an assistant to architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. He was a foreman (Kondukteur) and supervised construction of the Rundāle and Jelgava Palaces. The gates and stable complex of Rundāle palace, however, were built after Jensen's own project in 1766-67. He also supervised construction of Zaļenieki Manor (1769–1774). Peter Von Biron
Peter von Biron (15 February 1724 – 13 January 1800) was the last duke of Courland and Semigallia from 1769 to 1795, when it was annexed by the Russian Empire. Life and reign Peter was born in Jelgava () as the oldest son of Ernst Johann von Biron, future Duke of Courland, and his wife Benigna von Trotha. From 1730 until 1740, he and his family lived in Moscow and St. Petersburg, where his father was a lover and favorite of Anna of Russia. When he was 16 years old, he was forced to follow his family into their exile, first to Tobolsk Governorate in Siberia, then from 1742 until 1762 in Yaroslavl. In 1765, he married Princess Caroline of Waldeck and Pyrmont, but the union produced only one son, who was stillborn, in 1766.
