A complete set of ''Svenska Akademiens ordbok'', as of late 2014. The majority of the volumes remain unbound in this set. ''Svenska Akademiens ordbok'' (), abbreviated SAOB, is a historical dictionary of the Swedish language published by the Swedish Academy. It is the Swedish counterpart of the ''Oxford English Dictionary'' (OED) or the ''Deutsches Wörterbuch'' (DWB). Work on the dictionary started in 1787. The first edition was published in 39 volumes between 1898 and 2023, in Swedish alphabet The Swedish alphabet () is a basic element of the Latin writing system used for the Swedish language. Theodor Wisén
Theodor Wisén (31 March 1835 – 15 February 1892) was a Swedish philologist of Scandinavian languages. Biography Wisén was born in the parish of Vissefjärda in Kalmar County. He studied the classics, especially Greek, before turning to Scandinavian languages. He was appointed professor in Lund in 1865, a position he held until his death. Wisén was reportedly a gifted teacher. His edition of the ''Homiliu-bok'' was awarded the prize by the Swedish Academy in 1874, and he published a number of notable books and monographs on Icelandic poetry. He held the chair of Scandinavian languages at Lund University from 1865, was the rector of the university 1876–1877, its prorector 1877–1885, and again rector 1885–1891. He was elected a member of the Swedish Academy in 1878. In 1889 he published the second edition of the Swedish Academy's '' Ordlista'', and in the 1880s was appointed editor-in-chief of Academy's dictionary. Spelling is a set of conventions for written language regarding how graphemes should correspond to the sounds of spoken language. ''Svenska Akademiens ordlista'' (, "Word list of the Swedish Academy"), abbreviated SAOL, is a spelling dictionary published every few years by the Swedish Academy. It is a single volume that is considered the final arbiter of Swedish spelling. Traditionally it carries the motto of the Swedish Academy, ''Snille och Smak'' ("Talent and Taste"), on its blue cloth cover. Whenever a new edition comes out lively discussions about new and changed entries erupt around the country. The Swedish alphabet () is a basic element of the Latin writing system used for the Swedish language. The 29 letters of this alphabet are the modern 26-letter basic Latin alphabet ( to ) plus , , and , in that order. It contains 20 consonants and 9 vowels (). The Latin alphabet was brought to Sweden along with the Christianization of the population, although runes continued in use throughout the first centuries of Christianity, even for ecclesiastic purposes, despite their traditional relation to the Old Norse religion. The runes underwent partial "latinization" in the Middle Ages, when the Latin alphabet was completely accepted as the Swedish script system, but runes still occurred, especially in the countryside, until the 18th century, and were used decoratively until mid 19th century. Knut Fredrik Söderwall
Knut Fredrik Söderwall (1 January 1842 – 30 May 1924) was a Swedish philologist, professor at Lund University, and member of the Swedish Academy. Biography Söderwall was born 1842 in Drängsered parish, Halland County. He was the son of the parish priest Per Söderwall and Margareta Johanna von Wachenfeldt. He graduated from the Lund Cathedral School in 1858, and entered Lund University. Söderwall received a Bachelor of Arts in 1863 and a PhD in 1865. He was appointed Docent 1865 and Adjunct professor in 1872. After six years as a stand-in (''extraordinarie professor'') for Theodor Wisén he became professor in Nordic languages in 1892. The same year he was also elected to Seat No. 5 of the Swedish Academy, also there as successor to Wisén. Söderwall retired as professor in 1907. He died in Lund 30 May 1924.
