Suʽad Al-ʽAli
Suad al-Ali (Arabic: سعاد العلي, c. 1972 – 25 September 2018) was an Iraqi human rights campaigner. She was the president of al-Wid al-Alami For Human Rights, an Iraqi non-governmental organisation focused on the rights of women and children. She was assassinated in the city of Basra, Iraq, on September 25, 2018. Her murder remains unsolved. Background Al-Ali was a leader of the 2018 protests in the city of Basra against corruption and economic, political and social problems. Su’ad Al-Ali was a strong advocate of women’s and children’s rights. She was the head of Al-Weed Al-Alaiami - an Iraqi NGO concentrating on "women's rights and demands” and "children's rights and many activities for the revival of childhood", according to the Gulf Centre for Human Rights. Tara Fares (; 10 January 1996 – 27 September 2018) was an Iraqi model, beauty blogger and Instagram star. Biography Fares was born in Baghdad, her father is an Iraqi Christian and her mother a Lebanese Shiite. Fares was forced to get married at the age of 16. She later said that her husband had been abusive. She recounted years after getting pregnant at age 17 of her forced marriage. Her pregnancy was concealed by her parents who then found another family for her. In 2013, Fares was voted beauty queen of Baghdad and went on to compete in the Miss Iraq competition, where she was a runner-up. Fares had a large following on social media site Instagram, with 2.7 million followers at the time of her death. Reham Yacoub
Reham Yacoub also known as Riham Yaqoob (; 1991 – 19 August 2020) was an Iraqi human rights advocate and doctor by profession who predominantly campaigned against human rights violations in Iraq and also served as a prominent figure protesting against the Government of Iraq during the Tishreeni protests since 2018. She also raised her voice and concern regarding youth employment, infrastructure and access to electricity. She was reportedly receiving death threats since 2018 for organising women's marches and ever since participating in the training courses supervised by the United States Consulate in Basra. Assassination On 19 August 2020, she was shot dead by unidentified gunmen along the Al Tijari Street in the southern city of Iraq in Basra. Rasha al-Hassan (died August 23, 2018) was an Iraqi beautician and entrepreneur. She was the founder of the Viola center for Iraqi Medical Beauty in Baghdad, Iraq. al-Hassan was named one of Iraq's "Thursday victims" when her 2018 death was connected to that of other prominent Iraqi women. al-Hassan's death raised international attention to the deaths of Iraqi women and was widely speculated to be part of a conspiracy against Iraqi women's empowerment and the beauty industry.
