Sussex Family History Group
Sussex Family History Group (SFHG) is an organisation with a world-wide membership of about 4,000 founded in 1972 to help those interested in researching their family history in East Sussex and West Sussex. The name reflects the fact that historically Sussex was a single county. SFHG is a member of the Federation of Family History Societies previously the Federation of Family History Societies, also known as The Federation, is a United Kingdom-based charitable organisation. In 2019 it rebranded to the Family History Federation. Its stated principal aims are "to co-ordinate and ass ... (FFHS) and a supporter of the Sussex Online Parish Clerks (OPC) project. The Keep, Brighton
The Keep is a purpose-built archive and historical resource centre which stores, conserves and gives the public access to the records of its three managing partners: The East Sussex Record Office, The University of Sussex Special Collections, and Brighton & Hove Museums Local History Collections. The Keep also houses the library and office of the Sussex Family History Group, functions as headquarters of Friends of The Keep Archives, and holds the Historic Environment Record database for East Sussex. From November 2018, it has also functioned as the South East Hub for the Unlocking Our Sound Heritage project for The British Library. It was funded by East Sussex County Council, the City Council of neighbouring Brighton and Hove and the University of Sussex, and was built on land close to the university in the Moulsecoomb area of Brighton and Hove. In January 2014, The National Archives put online the digitised records of over 8,000 individuals seeking exemption from conscription into the army in Middlesex during the First World War. East Sussex is a Ceremonial counties of England, ceremonial county in South East England. It is bordered by Kent to the north-east, West Sussex to the west, Surrey to the north-west, and the English Channel to the south. History Of Sussex
Sussex , from the Old English 'Sūþseaxe' ('South Saxons'), is a historic county in South East England. Evidence from a fossil of Boxgrove Man (''Homo heidelbergensis'') shows that Sussex has been inhabited for at least 500,000 years. It is thought to be the oldest human fossil ever discovered in Britain. Near Pulborough, tools have been found that date from around 35,000 years ago and that are thought to be from either the last Neanderthals in northern Europe or pioneer populations of modern humans. On the South Downs lie Neolithic flint mines that date to around 4000BC, some of the earliest in Europe. The county is also rich in remains from the Bronze Age and Iron Age. Prior to Roman invasions it was occupied by a Belgic tribe called the Atrebates. Togidubnus ruled over much of Sussex when the Roman conquest of Britain began and formed most of the Roman canton of the Regni.
