Susan Slaughter
Susan Slaughter is an American orchestral trumpet player. She was principal trumpet player of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra for 40 years, from 1972 until 2010. She is the first woman to hold the position of principal trumpet in a major American orchestra. She is also the founder of the International Women's Brass Conference and Monarch Brass, an all female brass ensemble. Education Slaughter grew up in McCordsville, Indiana and began playing the trumpet at 10 years old, in her school band. She was not allowed to play in her high school band because of her gender, except for once as a substitute. She took private lessons through the Jordan Conservatory in Indianapolis, Indiana during high school. She attended Indiana University School of Music, studying with Herbert Mueller and graduating in 1967 with a Bachelor of Music Degree and Performer's Certificate. Robert Nagel
Robert Nagel (September 29, 1924 – June 5, 2016) was an American trumpet player, composer, and teacher. He was an early advocate for brass chamber music, especially the brass quintet. Nagel was the founder and director of the New York Brass Quintet, as well as a founding member of the International Trumpet Guild. He served as a faculty member of the Yale School of Music from 1957 - 1988. As a composer and arranger, Nagel wrote solo and small ensemble music, trumpet method books, and orchestral works. Aspen Music Festival And School
The Aspen Music Festival and School (AMFS) is a European classical music, classical music festival held annually in Aspen, Colorado. It is noted both for its concert programming and the musical training it offers to mostly young-adult music students. Arnold Jacobs
Arnold Maurice Jacobs (June 11, 1915 – October 7, 1998) was an American tubist who spent most of his career with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He held that position from 1944 until his retirement in 1988. Jacobs was considered one of the foremost brass pedagogues of his time as well as an expert on breathing as it related to brasswind, woodwind, and vocal performance. Due to childhood illness and adult onset asthma, his lung capacity was significantly impaired. He is best remembered for his playing philosophy which he referred to as "''Song and Wind.''" Claude Gordon
Claude Eugene Gordon (April 5, 1916 - May 16, 1996), nicknamed the "King of Brass", was an American trumpet player, band director, educator, lecturer and writer. Life Claude Gordon was born on April 5, 1916 in Helena, Montana. His father, James Austin Gordon, was a clarinet player and orchestra director, and his mother, Nellie "Elge", was a pianist. His siblings formed a family orchestra, led by their father, that performed as the staff orchestra for a local radio station. Gordon was given his first cornet at the age of five, and three years later, in fifth grade, was featured as a soloist with the Helena High School Band. In his early teens, he began playing professionally and taught cornet and accordion. In 1936, Gordon married Genevieve "Jenny" Pentecost. He raised two sons with her, Gary and Steven. Laurie Frink
Laurie Ann Frink (August 8, 1951, Pender, Nebraska – July 13, 2013, New York City) was an American jazz trumpeter who worked primarily in big band idioms. Frink attended the University of Nebraska (1969-1972) and studied under Jimmy Maxwell (1972-1974). From 1978 to 1987 she played trumpet in the Mel Lewis Orchestra, and during the same period was a member of Gerry Mulligan's concert band. She worked with George Russell in 1980 and with the bands of Benny Goodman (1986) and Buck Clayton (1988). She began playing in Bob Mintzer's ensemble in 1984, playing with him until 1997. From 1992 until her death, she was a member of the Maria Schneider Orchestra. She also worked with John Hollenbeck, Darcy James Argue, and Ryan Truesdell. Toledo Symphony Orchestra
The Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts was created in 2019 when the Toledo Symphony Orchestra and the Toledo Ballet merged.
