Susan C. Vaughan
Susan C. Vaughan is an American author, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. She serves as the director of the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (2017-), Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. Vaughan has written widely on gender, sexuality and the neuroscience behind psychotherapy. She is the author of three books: ''The Talking Cure: The Science Behind Psychotherapy'', ''Half Empty, Half Full: Understanding the Psychological Roots of Optimism'', and ''Viagra: A Guide to the Phenomenal Potency Promoting Drug''. A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in psychiatry. Psychiatrists are physicians who evaluate patients to determine whether their symptoms are the result of a physical illness, a combination of physical and mental ailments or strictly mental issues. Sometimes a psychiatrist works within a multi-disciplinary team, which may comprise clinical psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, and nursing staff. Psychiatrists have broad training in a biopsychosocial approach to the assessment and management of mental illness. The Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research was founded in 1945. It is part of the Department of Psychiatry of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
