Surprise Recreation Campus
The Surprise Recreation Campus is an athletic facility based in Surprise, Arizona built in 2002. It features such amenities as Surprise Stadium (spring training home of Major League Baseball's Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers), 12 baseball fields (6 lighted), and Mark Coronado Park, an multipurpose field (lighted). The facility at one time played host to an independent professional baseball team, the Golden Baseball League's Surprise Fightin' Falcons and previously host a minor league baseball team, the Surprise Rafters of the Arizona Fall League. The recreation campus hosts an annual Christmas event, Sparkling Surprise, that includes food trucks, hot air balloons, sky divers, vendors and live music. Surprise is a city in Maricopa County, in the U.S. state of Arizona. The population was 143,148 at the 2020 census, up from 117,517 in 2010 and just 30,848 in 2000. The city has a Aquatics Center and Maricopa County's northwest regional library, a $5.5 million, library, along with a 100.3 cost of living index. History The city was founded in 1938 by Flora Mae Statler, who named it Surprise as she "would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much." Surprise officials previously thought the city was founded by Statler's husband, real estate developer and state legislator Homer C. Ludden, but in 2010 property records were discovered which listed Statler owning the land before she met Ludden. When Surprise was subdivided to build inexpensive houses for agricultural workers, there were only a few houses and a gas station on the one-square-mile (1.6 km) parcel of land. The Texas Rangers are an American professional baseball team based in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. Golden Baseball League
The Golden Baseball League was an independent baseball league based in San Ramon, California, with teams located in the western United States, western Canada and northwest Mexico. The GBL was not affiliated with Major League Baseball or the organized Minor League Baseball system, but has featured players with MLB experience (Rickey Henderson, Jose Canseco, Alex Arias, Bud Smith, Desi Wilson, José Lima, Hideki Irabu, Junior Spivey, Mark Prior). It was formed in 2004 and began play on May 26, 2005. The GBL's presenting partner was Safeway Inc. The Surprise Fightin' Falcons are an inactive professional baseball team based in Surprise, Arizona. They played in the Arizona Division of the independent Golden Baseball League, which is not affiliated with either Major League Baseball ''or'' Minor League Baseball. They played their homes games at the Surprise Recreation Campus athletic facility, which includes a spring training ballpark called Surprise Stadium. The Arizona Fall League (AFL) is an off-season sports league owned and operated by Major League Baseball (MLB) which operates during the autumn in Arizona, United States, at six different baseball complexes. Arizona Fall League rosters are filled by many of the top prospects in Minor League Baseball (MiLB) who are assigned by their parent clubs. Structure The six teams of the AFL are organized in two three-team divisions.
