Surinamese League
The SVB Eerste Divisie is the second highest football championship for clubs run by the Surinaamse Voetbal Bond. The league currently comprises twelve teams and operates a system of promotion and relegation. Seasons run from November to June, with each team playing 30 games in the regular season. The league was previously known as the Hoofdklasse but was rebranded as the Topklasse for the 2016–17 season, before being renamed the Eerste Divisie starting in the 2017–18 season. In 2024, the SVB introduced a new professional competition, the Suriname Major League, with the Eerste Divisie now serving as the nation's top amateur competition. The Surinamese Football Association ( ) is the governing body of football in Suriname. It organizes the Surinamese football league system, the Surinamese Cup, Suriname President's Cup, Suriname national football team, and the Suriname women's national football team. It is based in Paramaribo, and is a founding member of CONCACAF and a member of FIFA. Just like neighboring French Guiana and Guyana, Suriname are not members of the South American CONMEBOL confederation, but instead of CONCACAF, which covers North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Kwatta
Kwatta is a resort in Suriname, located in the Wanica District. Its population at the 2012 census was 14,151. Kwatta is named after a former cocoa plantation located here. VV Cicerone
Voetbal Vereniging Cicerone, known as Cicerone, was a Surinamese football club based in Paramaribo that last played in the Tweede Klasse, in the 1957–58 season. History Cicerone was founded as an artistic dance club on 26 October 1910. Over the years the club evolved into a multisports club, including a Korfball, Football and Basketball team. The football branch was founded on 22 January 1929 in Paramaribo, Suriname, Cicerone are an older football club, and one of the first clubs to compete in the Hoofdklasse, the highest level of football in the country, winning the National title four seasons in a row from 1931 to 1935. 1932 SVB Eerste Klasse
The SVB Tweede Divisie is third-highest division overall in the Surinamese football league system after the SVB Eerste Divisie, where the top club is promoted to each season. The weakest club is relegated to the Derde Divisie. The league was previously known as the SVB Eerste Klasse but became the Eerste Divisie for the 2016–17 season after Suriname's top division changed its name from Hoofdklasse to Topklasse, only to be rebranded as the Tweede Divisie for the 2017–18 season. Rooms Katholieke Voetbal Vereniging Olympia, known as Olympia, was a Surinamese football club based in Centrum, Paramaribo that played in the Hoofdklasse, the highest level of football in Suriname. In 1923 the club became the first official national champion of Suriname. History Olympia was founded as a Roman Catholic club on 27 January 1919, two days after the inauguration of their sporting grounds, the Katholieke Sport Centrale. Situated on the Patronaatterrein, the Katholieke Sport Centrale had been established as a replacement for the Gouvernementsplein as the primary playing field for organized football matches in Paramaribo at the time. The club were able to secure the first two official National championships of the SVB Hoofdklasse in 1923 and 1924. Sportvereniging Nationaal Leger, known as SNL, is the Surinamese football club of the national military, which currently plays in the Eerste Divisie. They play their home games in Paramaribo at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadion. History Early years In 1926, the military football club M.V.V. (Militaire Voetbal Vereniging) was founded, out of which SNL amalgamated. Prior to the establishment of M.V.V. however, there was another football club of the Surinamese military, namely M.V.C.J. (Militaire Voetbal Club Juliana), founded in 1909. The club was founded by Captain Hirschman, who felt that playing football was an ideal military practice, training the capacity to oversee the dynamic on a playing field, while training speed and accuracy.
