Surf Life Saving New Zealand
Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) is the national association representing 74 Surf Life Saving Clubs in New Zealand. The organisation's motto is 'In it for Life'. This refers to both the long relationship many members have with the organisation, as well as to the organisation's purpose of preventing drowning and injury, thereby saving lives. Specific New Zealand beaches are patrolled by qualified Surf Lifeguards from mid October until April each year. Red and Yellow flags indicate that a beach is patrolled by Surf Lifeguards. The area of water in between these flags is designated as the safest place to swim on the beach, as well as showing where Surf Lifeguards are patrolling. It is widely publicised that beachgoers should "Swim Between the Flags" in order to be safe while swimming in the ocean. Surf lifeguards are identifiable by their yellow shirts and red shorts. Surf Life Saving Northern Region
Surf Life Saving Northern Region is the largest of four regions that make up Surf Life Saving New Zealand. As of the 2021/2022 season, it is made up of 18 clubs that look after 22 patrol locations from Ahipara to Raglan on the West Coast and from Whangārei Heads to Takapuna on the East Coast. The organisation currently employs 16 full-time staff as well as more than 100 seasonal roles in the Volunteer Lifeguard Service, Paid Lifeguard Service, Community Education and Search and Rescue Services. Piha Rescue
''Piha Rescue'' is a New Zealand reality series following the daily actions of the Piha Surf Life Saving Club lifeguards on Piha surf beach, one of the country's most popular beaches. Piha is one of the many beaches located on the North Island West Coast near Auckland. Filming commenced on ''Piha Rescue'' for the first time in the summer of 2001, followed by a one-hour documentary airing in December 2002 (aired as ''Piha Patrol''). It was the first reality show in the world following lifeguards. In 2003 the first series screened on Television New Zealand followed by a further ten; with the final (12th) series screened on Prime in 2016 and 2017. Piha Surf Life Saving Club (sometimes called Piha Lifeguard Service) is a surf lifesaving club for the southern section of Piha, on the west coast of Auckland Region, Auckland, New Zealand, some 45 km from the Auckland central business district, Auckland City centre. The patrol was featured in the TVNZ reality television, reality show ''Piha Rescue''. The club is the best-known of 17 surf lifesaving clubs in the Surf Life Saving Northern Region, Northern Region of New Zealand, and possibly one of the best-known surf lifesaving clubs in the entire country. Its high-profile is partly being due to its participation in the television series and partly through its location on one of the country's most-popular surfing beaches. Worser Bay
Worser Bay in Wellington, New Zealand is along the beach from Seatoun and over the hill from Miramar on the Miramar Peninsula. It has a calm sandy beach with a road running along the base of the Seatoun Heights hill. Houses run all along the hill side of the road, with only carparks and beach facilities opposite. The beach is subject to the windy conditions of Wellington with gusty northerlies often changing to cold, consistent southerlies. The waters are calm as the beach is within the natural harbour and in summer it is a popular destination for families, much like the nearby Scorching Bay.
