Surf City (band)
Surf City are a space rock/shoegaze/ indie band from Auckland, New Zealand. History Surf City was formed in 2004 in Mt Roskill, Auckland. Attention for the band quickly spread overseas, and they were picked up by notable label Morr Music for U.S and German distribution. Music website Stereogum tapped them as a "jangling, uptempo but melancholic form of shoegaze pop". Mt Roskill
Mount Roskill () is a suburban area in the city of Auckland, New Zealand. It is named for the volcanic peak Puketāpapa, Mount Roskill. Etymology The name Mount Roskill was first recorded as Mt Rascal in 1841, on a map created by a Wesleyan missionary, referring to the volcanic peak Puketāpapa. The origin of this name is unclear, however an apocryphal story links the name to a livestock thief from the early colonial era, who allegedly used the peak as a grazing area for stolen sheep and cattle. The peak was variously called Mount Roskill or Mount Kennedy (after landowner Alexander Kennedy). The name Mount Roskill for the peak and the surrounding area likely cemented after 1867, when the local government administering Dominion Road was formed, which took the name Mt Roskill Highway Board. Fire Records was an American independent record label, set up in 1959 by Bobby Robinson (record producer), Bobby Robinson. Amongst others, it released records by Lightnin' Hopkins, Elmore James, Buster Brown and Arthur Crudup. At one point it was thought Fire had issued the last commercial 78rpm disc in the United States. Although this has been disproven, the label is still known for their late-issue 78s. Arch Hill Recordings, formerly Arch Hill Studios, is a New Zealand recording studio and record label in Auckland. It was founded in 1998. Artists include David Kilgour, The Clean, The Bats, Don McGlashan, Bachelorette, The Boxcar Guitars, Luke Buda, Dappled Cities, Fang, Ghostplane, Grand Prix, The Haints of Dean Hall, Jay Clarkson, Surf City, Lanky, Mestar, David Mulcahy (formerly of the Jean-Paul Sartre Experience), Pine, White Swan Black Swan and Punches. Arch Hill Recordings, the label, was born out of a studio called Arch Hill Studios, based on Auckland New Zealand's Great North Rd. Shoegaze (originally called shoegazing and sometimes conflated with dream pop) is a subgenre of indie rock, indie and alternative rock characterized by its ethereal mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortion (music), distortion and effects, audio feedback, feedback, and overwhelming volume.Pete Prown / Harvey P. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand in the early to mid-1980s. Although the term was originally used to describe rock music released through independent record labels, by the 1990s it became more widely associated with the music such bands produced.
