Surat Thani (, ) is a city in Amphoe Mueang Surat Thani, Surat Thani Province, southern Thailand. It lies south of Bangkok. It is the capital of Surat Thani Province. The city has a population of 132,040 (2019), and an area of . The city's population density is 1,914 inhabitants per km2. Surat Thani is located near the mouth of the Tapi River on the Gulf of Thailand. The city offers no major tourist attractions in itself, and is mainly known to tourists as the jumping-off point to Ko Samui, Ko Tao, and Ko Pha Ngan. It is the regional commercial center, with a seaport dealing in the main products of the province, rubber and coconuts. Toponymy The city received its name, which means "city of good people", by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) in 1915. The name was given to the city due to the intense devotion of the locals to Buddhism. List Of Municipalities In Thailand
Thailand divides its settlements ('' thesaban'') into three categories by size: city municipalities ('' thesaban nakhon''), towns ('' thesaban mueang'') and townships (or subdistrict municipality) (''thesaban tambon''). There are 33 city municipalities as of November 2024. The national capital Bangkok and the special governed city Pattaya fall outside these divisions. They are "self-governing districts". Due to the outdated nature of the ''thesaban'' system, any city municipality's growth subsequent to its settlement designation is not included in both area and population numbers. Vajiravudh
Vajiravudh (1 January 188126 November 1925) was the sixth Monarchy of Thailand, king of Siam from the Chakri dynasty, titled Rama VI. He reigned from 1910 until his death in 1925. King Vajiravudh is best known for his efforts to create and promote Thaification, Siamese nationalism. His reign was characterized by Siam's movement further towards democracy and minimal participation in World War I. He had keen interests in Siamese history, archaeology, and literature, as well as economics, politics and world affairs, and founded the country's first university, Chulalongkorn University. Asian Highway
The Asian Highway Network (AH), also known as the Great Asian Highway, is a cooperative project among countries in Asia and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to improve their connectivity via highway systems. It is one of the three pillars of the Asian Land Transport Infrastructure Development (ALTID) project, endorsed by the ESCAP commission at its 48th session in 1992, comprising Asian Highway, Trans-Asian railway (TAR) and facilitation of land transport projects. Agreements have been signed by 32 countries to allow the highway to cross the continent and also reach to Europe. Nakhon Si Thammarat (, ; from ) is a city municipality (''thesaban nakhon'') located in Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat, the capital of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. Nakhon Si Thammarat Province is situated in the South of Thailand. It is about south of Bangkok, on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula. The city was the administrative centre of Southern Thailand during most of its history. Originally, a coastal city, silting moved the coastline away from the city. Phunphin (, ) is a district (''amphoe'') in Surat Thani province in the south of Thailand. Tha Kham is the principal town of the district. In 2014, the population was 73,067. Geography Neighboring districts are (from north clockwise): Tha Chang, Bandon, Ban Na Doem, Khian Sa, Khiri Rat Nikhom, and Vibhavadi. It has a short coastline on Bandon Bay to the northeast. Surat Thani Railway Station
Surat Thani railway station (SRT Code: SRN) is the main railway station in Surat Thani Province, Thailand. It is on the State Railway of Thailand's Southern Line, located 635.106 km from Thon Buri railway station. The station is on the eastern bank of the Tapi River in Tha Kham town, Phun Phin District. Surat Thani Station first opened in 1915, and was originally named ''Phun Phin Station''. The name was later changed to "Surat Thani railway station". It is also the station to alight for passengers traveling to Ko Samui. History In World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army used the station as a base for military activity. Thesaban Nakhon
Thesaban (, , , Pali: desapāla (protector of region) are the municipalities of Thailand. There are three levels of municipalities: city, town, and sub-district. Bangkok and Pattaya are special municipal entities not included in the ''thesaban'' system. The municipalities assume some of the responsibilities which are assigned to the districts (''amphoe'') or subdistricts (''tambon'') for non-municipal (rural) areas. Sukhaphiban
Sukhaphiban (; translated as "sanitary district") were administrative divisions of Thailand. Sanitary districts were the first sub-autonomous entities established in Thailand. A first such district was created in Bangkok by a royal decree of King Chulalongkorn in 1897. The king had learned about the sanitary districts in England during his European trip earlier that year, and he wanted to try this local administration in his country as well. Tha Chalom District became the second such district, created in 1906 and responsible for parts of Mueang Samut Sakhon District, Samut Sakhon Province. In 1907 the act on operations of sanitary districts codified the regulations, and with the ''Local Administration Act'' of 1914 two levels of sukhaphiban were introduced, the ''sukhaphiban mueang'' for towns and ''sukhaphiban tambon'' for rural areas.
