Extra Foods
Extra Foods (also branded as ''extrafoods'') was a Canadian supermarket chain, part of Loblaw Companies Limited. Founded in 1982, the chain had 106 locations at its peak in 2006 and were located through most of Western Canada. Most Extra Foods stores were smaller than its sister chain, Real Canadian Superstore, and most locations were in smaller, rural communities. Extra Foods is similar to Ontario's Your Independent Grocer/Zehrs banners, as well as Quebec's Provigo banner. In 2008, Loblaw began converting some locations to the similar No Frills format already used for the company's deep-discount stores in Ontario. In 2010, Loblaw began converting some locations to a new format similar to the "Great Foods" stores found in Ontario, some of which have since converted to Your Independent Grocer. Your Independent Grocer (YIG), known colloquially as "Independent" or "Yours" is a supermarket chain in Canada with more than 100 locations. It has stores in every province and territory except Manitoba, Nunavut, and Quebec. It is a unit of National Grocers, itself a unit of Loblaw Companies Limited. Stores are typically operated by a franchise owner. Many of the stores were originally Ottawa-area outlets of the defunct Quebec-based Steinberg's grocery chain. When Steinberg's was bought out by Metro Richelieu in 1992, the Ottawa-area franchises were spun off into the separate Your Independent Grocer chain. Many SaveEasy locations in Atlantic Canada became Your Independent Grocer locations between 2014 and 2016. Valu-mart (styled as valu-mart) is a chain of supermarkets based in Ontario, Canada. It is a unit of National Grocers, itself a unit of Loblaw Companies Limited, Canada's largest food distributor. Stores are typically operated by a franchise owner. The stores operate in smaller locations than others operated by Loblaw Companies Limited, and are often opened in former locations where other Loblaw Companies Limited stores had been, including those formerly operated under the Zehrs or Mr. Grocer banners. T&T Supermarket () is a Canadian Asian supermarket chain founded in Vancouver in 1993 by Jack and Cindy Lee who was the founding CEO. Cindy's eldest daughter Tina Lee succeeded her mother in 2014. In 2009, T&T Supermarket was acquired by Loblaw Companies Limited. T&T Supermarket has 37 locations in Canada, and one location in the United States. The stores range in size from to . SuperValu (Canada)
SuperValu is a chain of franchised and independent grocery stores in Canada that currently operates in the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta. Background Founded in British Columbia in 1951 by Loblaw Companies Limited as a chain of independently-owned supermarkets supplied by Loblaws' wholesale subsidiary, Kelly Douglas & Company. In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, many SuperValu stores were created from former Loblaws corporate stores as the banner expanded across western Canada. Loblaw Companies Limited (through its Westfair Foods division) still supplies SuperValu stores and owns the SuperValu name. Shoppers Drug Mart
Shoppers Drug Mart Inc. (colloquially Shoppers; named Pharmaprix in Quebec) is a Canadian retail pharmacy chain based in Toronto, Ontario. It has more than 1,300 stores in ten provinces and two territories. The company was founded by pharmacist Murray Koffler in 1962; the Koffler family still retains ownership of the Super-Pharm pharmacy, which has locations in Israel, Poland, and formerly in China (as Ensure from 2005 to 2011). Super-Pharm's logo is similar to that of Shoppers Drug Mart, which was created by the artist Sylvain Liu. It also uses some of the same private-label brands, such as ''Life Brand'' and ''Quo''. Real Canadian Superstore is a chain of supermarkets owned by Canadian food retailing giant Loblaw Companies. Its name is often shortened to Superstore, or, less commonly, RCSS (pronounced “Rick’s”). Originating in Western Canada in the late 1970s/early 1980s, the banner expanded into Ontario in the early 2000s as Loblaw attempted to fend off competition from department stores including U.S.-based Walmart Canada, Walmart. Loblaw has tested alternative banners at some locations in Ontario, with some labelled as "Loblaw Superstore", and a few others as simply "Superstore"; for a time, this was reflected in the chain's marketing which used a separate logo to advertise all of these banners. Real Atlantic Superstore is a Canadian supermarket chain. The chain operates in the Maritimes, the Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. It is owned by George Weston Limited through Loblaw Companies Limited, and operates under the Atlantic Wholesalers division of Loblaws. Provigo is a grocery retailer based in Quebec, Canada, consisting of over 300 stores and franchises throughout the province. It operates a retailing chain of stores and distribution warehouses. It is owned by Loblaw Companies Limited. The chain's advertising slogan is "''Si vite, si bon!''" ("So quick, so good!") History In 1969, in response to Canadian and American competition, a consortium of four Quebec wholesalers merged their activities with the intent to save costs and establish services as a big company. No Frills (currently styled ''NOFRILLS'' and formerly styled ''nofrills'') is a Canadian chain of discount supermarkets, owned by Loblaw Companies Limited, a subsidiary of George Weston Limited. There are over 300 franchise stores located in nine Canadian provinces. History The first No Frills store was a converted Loblaws outlet slated for closure. The store opened on July 5, 1978, in East York, Toronto. While it offered a very limited range of goods and basic customer service, the store promoted discount prices. Maxi is a discount grocery retailer based in Quebec, Canada. Founded in 1984 by Provigo, it is a Division (business), division of Loblaw Companies and the largest of Loblaws' Quebec supermarket chains. Maxi is the Quebec equivalent of No Frills (grocery store), No Frills, a chain of franchised discount grocery stores outside Quebec, except that Maxi stores are owned by the company.
