Super Mai-A Hydropower Station
Super Mai-A Hydropower Station (Nepali: सुपर माई A जलविद्युत आयोजना) is a run-of-the-river hydro-electric plant located in Ilam District of Nepal. The flow from Mai River is used to generate 9.6 MW electricity. The design head is 199.3 m. The plant is owned and developed by Sagarmatha Jalbidhyut Company Pvt. Ltd., an IPP of Nepal. The plant started generating electricity from 2077-02-32BS. The generation licence will expire in 2109-11-17 BS, after which the plant will be handed over to the government. The power station is connected to the national grid and the electricity is sold to Nepal Electricity Authority. Mai River
The Mai Khola is a river in eastern Nepal, the headwater of the Kankai River. Its water is used for irrigation and also powers several hydroelectric plants. Location The Mai Khola is the main tributary of the Kankai. It is a perennial river that originates in springs in the Mahabharat Range about above sea level. It flows from north to south. Major tributaries include the Jog Mai Khola and the Puwa Khola. The Independent Power Producers Association Nepal (IPPAN; स्वतन्त्र उर्जा उत्पादकहरुको संस्था, नेपाल)is an association of private developers and owners of power producers of Nepal. It is a non-profit, non-government autonomous organization and was established in 2001. Its main objective is to link the private sector and government organizations involved in hydropower generation. IPPAN is primarily a membership organization. The General Assembly comprises both institutional and individual members. The General Assembly elects the Board of Directors, which then formulates the plans and policies of the organization. As of 2020, there are 580 private hydropower projects that are in operation or under construction with a total capacity to generate 21,000 MW. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), founded on 16 August 1985, is the parent generator, transmittor and retail distributor of electric power under the supervision of the government of Nepal. NEA has its own power plants. In addition it also buys power from Independent Power Producers (IPP). Most of the power is generated from hydro electricity. Hydroelectricity, or hydroelectric power, is Electricity generation, electricity generated from hydropower (water power). Hydropower supplies 15% of the world's electricity, almost 4,210 TWh in 2023, which is more than all other Renewable energy, renewable sources combined and also more than nuclear power. Hydropower can provide large amounts of Low-carbon power, low-carbon electricity on demand, making it a key element for creating secure and clean electricity supply systems. Gravity Dams
A gravity dam is a dam constructed from concrete or stone masonry and designed to hold back water by using only the weight of the material and its resistance against the foundation. Gravity dams are designed so that each section of the dam is stable and independent of any other dam section. Characteristics Gravity dams generally require stiff rock foundations of high bearing strength (slightly weathered to fresh), although in rare cases, they have been built on soil. Stability of the dam primarily arises from the range of normal force angles viably generated by the foundation. Also, the stiff nature of a gravity dam structure endures differential foundation settlement poorly, as it can crack the dam structure. Run-of-river hydroelectricity (ROR) or run-of-the-river hydroelectricity is a type of hydroelectricity, hydroelectric generation plant whereby little or no water storage is provided. Run-of-the-river power plants may have no water storage at all or a limited amount of storage, in which case the storage reservoir is referred to as pondage. A plant without pondage is subject to seasonal river flows, so the plant will operate as an intermittent energy source. Conventional hydro uses reservoirs, which regulate water for flood control, dispatchable generation, dispatchable electrical power, and the provision of fresh water for agriculture.
