Stereolab
Stereolab are an English people, Anglo-French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990. Led by the songwriting team of Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier, the group's sound incorporates repetitive motorik beats with the use of vintage electronic keyboards and female vocals sung in English and French, drawing influences from krautrock, funk, jazz, 1960s Yé-yé, French pop and Brazilian music. Their lyrics have political and philosophical themes influenced by the Surrealist and Situationist International, Situationist art movements. Stereolab were formed by Gane (guitar and keyboards) and Sadier (vocals, keyboards and guitar) after the break-up of McCarthy (band), McCarthy. The two were romantically involved for fourteen years and are the group's only consistent members. ''Switched On'' (also known as ''Switched On Stereolab'' or ''Switched On Volume 1'') is a compilation of Stereolab's first three releases, and was originally released in 1992. The album's name is in tribute to ''Switched-On Bach'' (1968) and other similar titles from the late 1960s to 1970s that feature Moog synthesizers as the primary instrument. ''Switched On'' was later licensed to Slumberland Records for a US release, and Rough Trade Germany, for that country, both in 1992. Compiled of tracks from ''Super 45'' and ''Super-Electric'' EPs plus the ''Stunning Debut Album'' 7" single, the album forms the first part of a pentalogy of Stereolab rarities collections along with '' Refried Ectoplasm'' (1995), '' Aluminum Tunes'' (1998), '' Electrically Possessed'' (2021), and '' Pulse of the Early Brain'' (2022). ''Peng!'' is the debut studio album by English-French band Stereolab. It was released on 26 May 1992 by Too Pure in the United Kingdom. The album was issued in the United States on 13 June 1995 by Too Pure and American Recordings. A remastered edition of the album was released on 9 November 2018 by Too Pure and Beggars Arkive. The album's title (a German onomatopoeia for a loud pop or bang) and cover art are derived from a comic strip named "Der tödliche Finger" that appeared in a 1970 issue of ''Hotcha'', a Swiss underground newspaper. Different panels of the same strip were adapted into cover art for other early Stereolab releases, and remain popular icons for the band. Too Pure Records was a London-based independent record label formed in 1990 by Richard Roberts and Paul Cox. The Flowers Of Hell
The Flowers of Hell are a transatlantic experimental orchestra made up of a revolving line-up of 16 or so independent musicians based in Toronto and London. Their mostly instrumental sound builds bridges between classical music and post-rock, shoegaze, space rock and drone music, often resulting in their being described as an orchestral extension of the work of The Velvet Underground and Spacemen 3. They are led by synesthete composer Greg Jarvis. Much of their repertoire is an exploration of the timbre-to-shape synesthesia that causes Jarvis to involuntarily perceive all sounds as floating abstract visual forms.
