Suontee
Suontee (also: Suonteejärvi) is a rather large lake in Finland in the Kymijoki river's main watershed. The northern part of the lake is located in the region of Central Finland, and the southern part in the region of Southern Savonia. The southern part is in a more natural state with very clear water, and it is included in the Natura 2000 conservation network of the EU. The protection area is 2 625 hectare. A typical bird there is the black-throated loon. In the past two big lakes, Suontee and Puula, were one lake until 1854, when the water level was lowered 2.5 meters. This has brought up geological stacks, which are formed by water. Puula
Puula (or Puulavesi) is a lake in the Kymi River area in the Finnish municipalities of Hirvensalmi, Kangasniemi and Mikkeli. Puula is above sea level, with a surface area of . It is deep at its deepest point, located near Porttisalmi at Simpiänselkä, which is the biggest open area of the lake. Two big lakes Suontee and Puula were one lake until year 1854, when the water level was lowered 2.5 meters. This brought geological stacks above the surface, which are formed by water. Water from lake Puula runs down to Vahvajärvi through Kissakoski Canal. Puula is known as a body of water with lake trout and lake salmon and it is therefore popular among trollers. The largest lake salmon in Finland in the 21st century, which weighed 12.4 kg, came from Puula. Multi-kilo trout are a typical catch from Puula. Pertunmaa
Pertunmaa () is a former municipality of Finland located in the Southern Savonia region. The municipality was merged to the municipality of Mäntyharju on 1 January 2025. The municipality had a population of 1,541 and covered an area of 454.20 km2 (175.37 sq mi) of which 79.7 km2 (30.8 sq mi) was water. The population density was 4.12/km2 (10.7/sq mi). The language of the municipality was Finnish. Neighbour municipalities were Hartola, Heinola, Hirvensalmi, Mäntyharju and Joutsa. Pertunmaa became an independent municipality in 1926 when it was separated from Mäntyharju. Hartola's old wooden church was moved to Pertunmaa and it was inaugurated in 1927. Due to the long-lasting economic difficulties, Pertunmaa was incorporated into Mäntyharju on January 1, 2025. Central Finland
Central Finland (; ) is a Regions of Finland, region ( / ) in Finland. Black-throated Loon
The black-throated loon (''Gavia arctica''), also known as the Arctic loon and the black-throated diver, is a migratory aquatic bird found in the northern hemisphere, primarily breeding in freshwater lakes in northern Europe and Asia. It winters along sheltered, ice-free coasts of the north-east Atlantic Ocean and the eastern and western Pacific Ocean. This loon was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 and has two subspecies. It was previously considered to be the same species as the Pacific loon, of which it is traditionally considered to be a sister species, although this is debated.
