Sunia Manu Fili
Sunia Manu Fili (born 1 December 1965) is a Tongan politician and former Cabinet Minister. He is a former member of the Human Rights and Democracy Movement and the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands. Biography Fili graduated with a BA from the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. He worked as a lawyer and high school teacher before entering politics. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly as People's Representative for ʻEua at the 1999 election. In September 2009 Fili was the only member of the Tongan Parliament to support the ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Fili was re-elected MP for the constituency of ʻEua in the 2010 election. He was appointed Minister of Finance in Lord Tuʻivakano's Cabinet, to which was added the portfolio of Inland Revenue on September 1, 2011. Sialeʻataongo Tuʻivakanō
Siale ʻAtaongo Kaho, Lord Tuʻivakanō (born 15 January 1952) is a Tongan politician who served as the Prime Minister of Tonga from 2010 to 2014. Descent and naming Tuʻivakanō was born in Niutoua on Tongatapu as Siale ʻAtaongo Kaho. His parents were Siaosi Kiu Ngalumoetutulu Kiutauivailahi Kao and Fatafehiʻolapaha Liku. He ascended to the traditional Tongan noble title of Tuʻivakanō (literally: ''king of the borrowed boat'') in January 1986 after the death of his father. As customary in Tonga, since that time his baptismal name is no longer used, instead he is referred to as ''Tuʻivakanō'' (without any further qualification), or in more formal surroundings as ''ʻEiki nōpele Tuʻivakanō'', nowadays translated in English as ''Lord (noble) Tuʻivakanō''. 2010 Tongan General Election
Early general elections under a new electoral law were held in Tonga on 25 November 2010. They determined the composition of the 2010 Tongan Legislative Assembly. The early elections were announced by the new King George Tupou V in July 2008 shortly before being crowned on 1 August 2008, and were preceded by a programme of constitutional reform. For the first time, a majority of the seats (17 out of 26) in the Tongan parliament were elected by universal suffrage, with the remaining nine seats being reserved for members of Tonga's nobility. This marked a major progression away from the 165-year rule of the monarchy towards a fully representative democracy. 2017 Tongan General Election
General elections were held in Tonga on 16 November 2017 to elect 17 of the 26 seats to the Legislative Assembly. King Tupou VI dissolved the Assembly on 25 August 2017 on the advice of its Speaker, Sialeʻataongo Tuʻivakanō, who claimed that Prime Minister ʻAkilisi Pohiva was attempting to claim powers held by the King and Privy Council within Cabinet. Nominations closed on 27 September, with 86 candidates contesting the 17 people's seats. The election resulted in a victory for the DPFI, with ʻAkilisi Pōhiva remaining as Prime Minister.
