Suncroft is a Gaelic football club in Suncroft, County Kildare, Ireland, winner of the day Senior Hurling championship in 1974 and the Senior Football League in 1952. Paul Doyle was selected on the Kildare Gaelic football team of the millennium. Anthony Rainbow was an All Stars Award winner in 2000. History In 2009, Suncroft completed one of the biggest shocks in the Kildare Senior Football Championship by beating the highly fancied Sarsfields by 2-12 to 0-15 at St Conleths Park. Suncroft
Suncroft () is a village in County Kildare, Ireland, south of The Curragh and east of Kildare Town. As of 2016, Suncroft had a population of 746. Name The name Suncroft means "a sun-blessed croft". According to local folklore, Suncroft was named by a priest who was walking in the croft (or field), and the sun was shining so brightly on the field that he decided to name the place Suncroft. Education The primary school in the town is Suncroft National School (in Irish ''Scoil Bhride, Crochta na Gréine''). Gaelic football (; short name '')'', commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA, or football, is an Irish team sport. A form of football, it is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or palming the ball into the other team's Goal (sport), goal (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goal and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the ball up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Paul Doyle (Gaelic Footballer)
Paul Doyle (1889 – 29 May 1953) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played as a left corner-forward for the Kildare senior team. Doyle made his first appearance for the team during the 1917 championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement after the 1931 championship. During that time he won three All-Ireland medals and six Leinster medals. Doyle was an All-Ireland runner-up on three occasions. The Kildare Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by Kildare GAA between the top clubs in County Kildare, Ireland. The winners of the Championship qualify to represent their county in the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship, Leinster Club Championship, the winners of which progress to the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. Kildare Senior Hurling Championship
The Kildare Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the UPMC Kildare Senior Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Kildare SHC) is an annual club hurling competition organised by the Kildare GAA, Kildare County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking senior clubs in the County Kildare, county of Kildare in Ireland, deciding the competition winners through a group and knockout format. It is the most prestigious competition in Kildare hurling. Kildare Intermediate Football Championship
The Kildare Intermediate Football Championship, or Kildare I.F.C., is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by mid-tier Kildare GAA clubs since 1928. The winners currently receive the Hugh Campion Cup in honour of the Suncroft GFC, Suncroft official who served as County Board Chairman from 1972 to 1981. Qualification for subsequent competitions Leinster Intermediate Club Football Championship The Kildare IFC winner qualifies for the Leinster Intermediate Club Football Championship. It is the only team from County Kildare to qualify for this competition. Kildare Junior Football Championship
The Kildare Junior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by lower-tier Kildare GAA clubs. The winning club plays in the Kildare Intermediate Football Championship in the following year. As of the 2022 season there is an overall Junior Championship winner as well as a Junior A winner (competed for between the bottom four teams in the Junior Championship Round Robin Group 2). There have been various iterations of the competition, which started in 1906 as the secondary competition to the Kildare Senior Football Championship. In 1928 a Kildare Intermediate Football Championship was started for middle tier teams with the Junior Championship ranking below that. In 1947 the Junior Championship was split into A and B competitions with the winners competing for the overall Junior title. Eoghan Corry (; born 19 January 1961) is an Irish journalist and author. He has edited travel sections in national newspapers and travel publications since the 1980s.
