Suncheon
Suncheon (; ) is the largest city in South Jeolla Province, South Korea, with a population of 280,719 as of 2022. It is located in the southeast of the province and is a scenic agricultural and industrial city, known for tourist attractions, such as Suncheon Bay. The port city of Yeosu is around forty minutes south of Suncheon and Gwangyang twenty minutes to the east of the city. It is currently experiencing strong development due to being included as part of the ''Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone'', one of three newly created Free Economic Zones (FEZs) in South Korea due to open within the next decade. As of October 14, 2007 plans are being set up and a referendum is being planned for a merging of the cities of Yeosu, Suncheon and Gwangyang into a new metropolitan city, taking advantage of the Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone, Yeosu's Expo 2012 bid and port facilities, Suncheon's educational institutes and Gwangyang's POSCO plant. 2013 Suncheon Garden Expo Korea
The Suncheon Bay Garden Expo 2013 () was the first of its kind to be held in Korea. The Expo focused on Environmental technology, green technology development such as solar energy, Sustainable gardening, sustainable garden development and Electric transportation technology, electric transportation. Suncheon Bay
Suncheon Bay is a coastal wetland in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. It is composed of a long stream, a wide tideland and a wide field of reeds. Due to its natural coast, it is the habitat of migratory birds, plants and animals. It is the first Korean coastal wetland, Suncheon Bay Ecological Park, to be registered on the list of The Ramsar Wetland on January 20, 2006. Characteristics Suncheon Bay's wide tideland, field of reeds, and salt swamp have their natural scenes undamaged. The salt swamp functions in water pollution prevention and purification, keeping Suncheon Bay clean and undamaged. South Jeolla Province
South Jeolla Province (), formerly South Chŏlla Province, also known as Jeonnam (), is a province in the Honam, Honam region, South Korea, and the Provinces of Korea, southernmost province in mainland Korea. Yeosu
Yeosu, formerly romanized as Yosu, is a coastal city located on the southern shore of South Korea. With a population of 268,823, Yeosu is the second largest city in South Jeolla Province. In 1998, the Old Yeosu City, Yeocheon City and Yeocheon County were merged and the current city, Yeosu, was formed. Etymology The place name "Yeosu" first appears in the ''Samguk sagi, Samguk Sagi Jiriji'' with the record: "Haeeup-hyeon (海邑縣) was originally Baekje's Wonzon-hyeon (猿村縣), but Gyeongdeok of Silla, King Gyeongdeok changed its name. Naganeupseong Folk Village () is a Korean historic village located in Nagan-myeon, Suncheon, South Jeolla, South Korea. This well-preserved walled town served as an administrative core for the county during the Joseon Dynasty and it is designated as historical site N0. 302. Overview Naganeupseong is a former administrative town. It consists of three neighborhoods located inside fortress walls, on a level field surrounded by mountains. It has well-preserved buildings such as a fortress, government buildings, and a cluster of private houses. The houses are hanok-style: they have straw roofs, clay rooms, and Korean-style verandas. Seonamsa () is a Korean Buddhist temple on the eastern slope at the west end of Jogyesan Provincial Park, within the northern Seungjumyeon District of the city of Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. Songgwang Temple
Songgwangsa (; translation: Spreading Pine Temple; alternates: Songgwang-sa, or Songgwang Sa, or Songkwangsa; also known as: Piney Expanse Monastery; originally: Gilsangsa), one of the three jewels of Korean Seon, Seon Buddhism, is located in South Jeolla Province on Mount Jogye on the Korean Peninsula. Situated approximately away from the sea, it is within the Jogyesan Provincial Park. Founded in 867, it fell into disuse and was reestablished in 1190 by Zen master, Seon master Jinul. Jinul's meditation teachings evolved from this monastery and contributed significantly to the Seon practice that prevails to this day in Korea. Jeju Uprising
The Jeju uprising (in South Korea, the ''Jeju April 3 incident'', ) was an insurrection on Jeju Island, South Korea from April 1948 to May 1949. A year prior to its start, residents of Jeju had begun protesting elections scheduled by the United Nations Temporary Commission on Korea (UNTCOK) to be held in the United States-occupied half of Korea, which they believed would entrench the division of the country. A general strike was later organized by the Workers' Party of South Korea (WPSK) from February to March 1948. The WPSK launched an insurgency in April 1948, attacking police and Northwest Youth League members stationed on Jeju who had been mobilized to suppress the protests by force. Gwangyang
Gwangyang (; ) is a city in South Jeolla Province, South Korea. Gwangyang is the home of POSCO's Gwangyang Steel Works, the largest facility of its kind in the world. The city is also home to K League Classic football side Jeonnam Dragons. Gwangyang is at the centre of development for the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone (GFEZ), the third-largest among the six free economic zones of South Korea, covering 92.7 square kilometers.
