Sunburst Park
Sunburst Park, originally known as Plaza de Aduana, is a recreational park situated in front of the Iloilo Customs House on Calle Real in downtown Iloilo City, Philippines. The park is named in honor of the United States Army 40th Infantry "Sunburst" Division, which played a significant role in liberating Panay from Japanese forces during World War II. It has also been referred to as Freedom Park. The park includes a walkway, a chess playground, benches for visitors, a parking area, a statue of Macario Peralta, and a designated Sunburst area. In 2019, the park underwent restoration after suffering from the effects of the renovation and expansion of the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand in 1992, which led to the demolition of various structures within the park, including eateries and display booths. Iloilo Customs House
The Iloilo Customs House (; ) is a historical building in Iloilo City, Philippines. It was built in 1916 to a design by American architect Ralph Harrington Doane, then Consulting Architect of the Bureau of Public Works in the Philippine Islands. Among the three American-era Custom house, customs houses in the Philippines, it is the second largest (after Manila's) and second oldest (after Cebu's, now known as Malacañang sa Sugbo). Calle Real (), officially named as J.M. Basa Street, is a historic street located in the old downtown district of Iloilo City Proper in Iloilo City, Philippines. It is home to several fine examples of luxury American-era neoclassical, beaux-arts, and art deco buildings. The street has been famous since the Spanish era and once served as the city's main shopping center for more than a century. Panay Liberation Day, alternatively Panay Landing Day and Victory (Liberation) Day on Panay is an annual event that commemorates the landing on Panay during the Battle of the Visayas in World War II. It is a public holiday on the islands of Panay and Guimaras in Western Visayas and Romblon in Mimaropa. In 1989, then-President Corazon Aquino issued Proclamation No. 430 or "An Act Declaring March 18 of every year as Victory Day in the Islands of Panay and Romblon including the cities of Iloilo and Roxas", declaring it a special non-working holiday for the three islands.
