Sujatha (1953 Film)
Sujatha is a 1953 Sri Lankan romantic musical film based on the Bollywood film '' Bari Behen''. It was the most successful Sri Lankan film made up to that time. Plot summary The protagonist Sujatha abandons her studies to provide for her young sister Prema after the death of their mother. Their mother had always wanted to secure a good education for Prema and Sujatha sees it fitting to make this sacrifice. When Prema heads to the city however, she is seduced and impregnated by a smooth talking womanizer named Wickie. Wickie dumps Prema who then returns to live with her older sister. They find solace in a caring doctor named Nihal who comes to fall in love with Sujatha. Prem Jayanth
Hettiarachchige Emanuel Aloysius Rodrigo (1933–17 March 1997), better known as Prem Jayanth, was an actor in Sri Lankan cinema as well as a producer and art director. Considered as the first male superstar in Sinhala cinema, Jayanth rose to prominence with starring roles in the popular films Sujatha (1953) and '' Seda Sulang'' (1955). Personal life Jayanth was born in Layards Broadway, Grandpass and attended Joseph’s College, Grandpass and St. Lucia's College Colombo 13. Jayanth married actress Nanda Leelanayake sometime in the 1960s and had seven children, two boys - Jagath and Janith - and five girls - Sunila, Sandhya, Anusha, Nirma and Shiroma. His son, Jagath Rohan appeared in few film including the 1980 film ''Sabeetha''. Jayanth died on 17 March 1997 at the age of 64. Nanda died on 26 September 2014 at the age of 84. Dharmadasa Walpola
Dharmadasa Walpola ( Sinhala: ධර්මදාස වල්පොල) (1927–1983) was the most prominent Sri Lankan male playback singer of the 1950s and 1960s. Walpola was an accomplished musician adapt at playing the flute, harmonium, violin and tabla. Biography Early life Walpola's father Palis Ayya worked with costumes for the Tower Hall theater. Walpola had to forgo his education at a young age to support his family and for a time built masks for the Sri Lankan army. At that time he won a role in Sirisena Wimalaweera's play ''Amma'' singing a virindu. He subsequently acted and sang in the play ''Wessanthara'' as well. To master the flute, Walpola began taking lessons from Eddie Master and then attended R. A. Chandrasena's Academy.
