Suite Lyrique
''Suite Antique'' is a 1979 Concerto grosso, concertante work by John Rutter that is written for harpsichord, flute and string orchestra. Rutter composed the piece, in six movements, for a concert at which Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, fifth Brandenburg concerto was to be performed, and so decided to write the piece for the same ensemble. One of Rutter's most popular orchestral works, it has become an important standard in contemporary flute repertoire and been recorded several times by Rutter and others. Rutter later arranged the musical content of Suite Antique for harp and strings, and published it in 2011 as ''Suite Lyrique''. Suite Lyrique contains the same six movements as Suite Antique: Prelude, Ostinato, Aria, Waltz, Chanson, and Rondeau. Alessandro Stradella seems to have written the first music in which two groups of different sizes are combined in the characteristic way. The name was first used by Giovanni Lorenzo Gregori in a set of ten compositions published in Lucca in 1698. The first major composer to use the term ''concerto grosso'' was Arcangelo Corelli. After Corelli's death, a collection of twelve of his ''concerti grossi'' was published. Not long after, composers such as Francesco Geminiani, ...
