Suite (music)
A suite, in Western classical music and jazz, is an ordered set of instrumental or orchestral/concert band pieces. It originated in the late 14th century as a pairing of dance tunes and grew in scope to comprise up to five dances, sometimes with a prelude, by the early 17th century. The separate movements were often thematically and tonally linked. The term can also be used to refer to similar forms in other musical traditions, such as the Turkish fasıl and the Arab nuubaat. In the Baroque era, the suite was an important musical form, also known as ''Suite de danses'', ''Ordre'' (the term favored by François Couperin), '' Partita'', or ''Ouverture'' (after the theatrical "overture" which often included a series of dances) as with the orchestral suites of Christoph Graupner, Telemann and J.S. Bach. During the 18th century, the suite fell out of favour as a cyclical form, giving way to the symphony, sonata and concerto. It was revived in the later 19th century, but in a ... Suite!
''Suite!'' is a double album by jazz pianist Roberto Magris released on the JMood label in 2019, featuring performances by Magris with his group from Chicago. Reception The All About Jazz review by Dan McClenaghan awarded the album 4½ stars and states: “The quick opinion on Suite!: the most successfully ambitious recording in Magris' discography, his magnum opus. Many double albums showcase the artist reaching a pinnacle of expression. For Roberto Magris, Suite! does just that, as the pianist / bandleader takes a step in the direction of social consciousness and spirituality with a killer band.” The All About Jazz review by Edward Blanco awarded the album 4½ stars and states: “Suite! is much more than an excellent jazz recording, it's a collection of wonderful music helpful in conveying and spreading a little peace, love and happiness, needed now, more than ever. Where and when have we heard this before?” The All About Jazz review by Karl Ackermann awarded the album 4 ... Vollard Suite
The ''Vollard Suite'' is a set of 100 etchings in the neoclassical style by the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, produced from 1930-1937. Named after the art dealer who commissioned them, Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939), the suite is in a number of museums, and individual etchings from the suite are collectible. More than 300 sets were created, but many were broken up and the prints sold separately. An earlier ''Vollard Suite'' was commissioned from Paul Gauguin in 1898–99, a smaller group in woodcut and monotype, which Vollard did not like. History In 1930 Picasso was commissioned to produce the etchings by the art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard in exchange for paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Cézanne. Picasso worked extensively on the set in the spring of 1933, and completed the suite in 1937. It took a further two years for the printmaker Roger Lacourière to finish printing the 230 full sets, but the death of Vollard in 1939 and the Second World War mea ... Suite (Penderecki)
The ''Suite'' (formerly and alternatively entitled ''Divertimento'') is a composition for solo cello by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki. The piece is well known for its typical chromatic melodies and for its recurrent use of pizzicati and col legno. Background Initially entitled ''Divertimento'', ''Suite'' was written over the course of twenty years and had many additions and revisions. Penderecki initially wrote this suite for solo cello as part of a musical collaboration with fellow cellist Mstislav Rostropovich which started with the Cello Concerto No. 2 and which went on for more than twenty years. It consisted of only three movements: ''Serenade'', ''Scherzo'', and ''Notturno'', all of them composed in 1994 and premiered on December 28, 1994, in Köln by Boris Pergamenschikow. The ''Suite'' was initially dedicated to Pergamenschikow and commissioned by KölnMusik. The composition was later revisited many times over the years until its completion in 2013. ''Saraband ... Suite (hotel)
A suite in a hotel or other public accommodation (e.g. a cruise ship) denotes, according to most dictionary definitions, connected rooms under one room number. Hotels may refer to suites as a class of accommodations with more space than a typical hotel room, but technically speaking there should be more than one room to constitute a true suite. In luxury or upscale accommodations, such as Ritz Carlton, InterContinental, Marriott, Westin, Four Seasons, Shangri-La or St. Regis, key features may include multiple rooms. Many independent properties have one or more honeymoon suites. The most luxurious accommodation in a hotel is often called the presidential suite or royal suite. Upper-midscale accommodations, such as Comfort Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites, and Candlewood Suites, may denote suites as one room with more space and furniture than a standard hotel room, and so technically these would not be considered suites of rooms per se. In addition to one or more beds and a bath ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Secondary Suite
Secondary suites (also known as accessory dwelling units, ADUs, in-law apartments and granny flats) are self-contained apartments, cottages, or small residential units, that are located on a property that has a separate main, single-family home, duplex, or other residential unit. In some cases, the ADU or in-law is attached to the principal dwelling or is an entirely separate unit, located above a garage or in the backyard on the same property. In British English the term ''annex'' or ''granny annex'' is used instead. Reasons for wanting to add a secondary suite to a property may be to receive additional income, provide social and personal support to a family member, or obtain greater security. Description Background Naming conventions vary by time-period and location but secondary suites can also be referred to as an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), mother-in-law suite, granny flat, coach house, laneway house, Ohana dwelling unit, granny annexe, granny suite, in-law suite, and acce ... Suite (Cassadó)
This Suite for violoncello, like the Cello Concerto and the Piano Trio, came from one of Gaspar Cassadó's most prolific periods, in the mid-1920s. It was dedicated to Francesco von Mendelssohn. The Suite consists of three dance movements: * Preludio-Fantasia - a Zarabanda * Sardana; and * Intermezzo e Danza Finale - a Jota. The first movement quotes Zoltán Kodály's Sonata for Solo Cello, and the famous flute solo from Maurice Ravel's ballet ''Daphnis et Chloé''. This Suite was popularized by the great cellist János Starker János Starker (; ; July 5, 1924 – April 28, 2013) was a Hungarian-American cellist. From 1958 until his death, he taught at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he held the title of Distinguished Professor. Starker is consider .... Droit De Suite
''Droit de suite'' (French for "right to follow") or Artist's Resale Right (ARR) is a right granted to artists or their heirs, in some jurisdictions, to receive a fee on the resale of their works of art. This should be contrasted with policies such as the American first-sale doctrine, where artists do not have the right to control or profit from subsequent sales. History The ''droit de suite'' was first proposed in Europe around 1893, in response to a decrease in the importance of the salon, the end of the private patron, and to champion the cause of the "starving artist". Many artists, and their families, had suffered from the war, and ''droit de suite'' was a means to remedy socially difficult situations. According to Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, ''droit de suite'' was created in France following the sale of Millet's 1858 painting, the '' Angélus'', in 1889 at the Secretan sale. The owner of the painting made a huge profit from this sale, whereas the family of the artist lived ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
