Sugar Island is mainly accessed through Lily Bay State Park, and is reached in approximately five minutes from the state park by boat. There is a fee at the state park of three dollars. There are two resident camps on Sugar Island on the south side, which have been frequented by three generations of family members and friends year after year. Moosehead Lake
Moosehead Lake is a deep, coldwater lake located in Piscataquis County in Northwestern Maine. It is the second-largest lake in New England, and the largest mountain lake in the eastern United States. Situated in the mostly undeveloped Longfellow Mountains, the lake is the source of the Kennebec River. Several rural Townships border the lake. Greenville is by far the largest town on the lake, with a small downtown area that has banks, shops, and restaurants. Piscataquis County, Maine
Piscataquis County is a county located in the U.S. state of Maine. As of the 2020 census, its population was 16,800, making it Maine's least-populous county. Its county seat is Dover-Foxcroft. The county was incorporated on March 23, 1838, taken from the western part of Penobscot County and the eastern part of Somerset County. It is named for an Abenaki word meaning "branch of the river" or "at the river branch." It is located at the geographic center of Maine. Originally it extended north to the Canada–US border, but in 1844 its northern portion was annexed by Aroostook County. Northwest Piscataquis is an unincorporated area in Piscataquis County, Maine, United States. The population was 134 at the 2020 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the unorganized territory has a total area of 1,632.0 square miles (4,226.8 km2), of which 1,372.4 square miles (3,554.5 km2) is land and 259.6 square miles (672.3 km2) (15.91%) is water. Several lakes of the North Maine Woods are located partially or completely in Northwest Piscataquis, including Telos Lake, Moosehead Lake, and Chesuncook Lake. Northwest Piscataquis also contains Big Spencer Mountain and Mount Kineo. The territory contains 41 townships and parts of ten other townships (shared with Northeast Piscataquis).
