Sudbury Rugby Union Football Club is a rugby union club located in Great Cornard near Sudbury, Suffolk. The first XV currently play in Regional 1 South East, a fifth tier league in the English rugby union system. League history When the league system was established in 1987, Sudbury was placed in the fourth tier, playing in 1987–88 Courage Area League South. The remained at this level until 1993–94 Courage League Division 4 when they were relegated after finishing bottom. Since then they have drifted down the leagues, ending up at level 8. In the mid 2010s the club won two consecutive promotions and now play at the 5th level. Eastern Counties Rugby Union
The Eastern Counties Rugby Union (ECRU) is the governing body for the sport of rugby union in the counties of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk in England. Clubs in the old Huntingdonshire and the Soke of Peterborough are affiliated to the East Midlands Rugby Football Union. The union is the constituent body of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) for those counties. The ECRU administers and organises rugby union clubs and competitions in those three counties and administers the Eastern Counties county rugby representative teams. Sudbury, Suffolk
Sudbury (, ) is a market town and civil parish in the south west of Suffolk, England, on the River Stour near the Essex border, north-east of London. It is the largest town in the Babergh local government district and part of the South Suffolk constituency. In 2021, the built-up area had a population of 23,912 and the parish had a population of 13,619. Sudbury was an Anglo-Saxon settlement from the end of the 8th century, and its market was established in the early 11th century. Regional 1 South East (formerly known as London & South East Premier and National League 3 London & South East) is a level five league in the English rugby union system. It is one of six leagues at this level. When this division began in 1987 it was known as London Division 1. The format of the league was changed at the beginning of the 2009–10 season following re-organisation by the Rugby Football Union while the name change from National League 3 to Premier was introduced for the 2017–18 season to make it more obvious that it is a regional league. Great Cornard
Great Cornard is a large village and civil parish that is part of the town of Sudbury, in the Babergh district, in the county of Suffolk, England. History The area now called Great Cornard has been occupied since pre-history, with evidence of Palaeolithic, Bronze Age and Roman settlements in the parish. The village is accounted for in the Domesday Book of 1086 as the manor of Cornard. A small undated ringwork, located to the south of Abbas Hall, may have been an manorial centre pre-Norman conquest. The 1987–88 Courage Area League South was the first full season of rugby union within the fourth tier of the English league system, currently known as the National League 2 South, and was the counterpart to Courage Area League South (now National League 2 North). 1993–94 Courage League Division 4
The 1993–94 Courage League Division 4 was the seventh full season of rugby union within the fourth tier of the English rugby union system, English league system, currently the regional divisions National League 2 South and National League 2 North, and the first using the name Division 4. The league had been created at the start of the season by the Rugby Football Union, RFU as part of their league restructuring, making tier 4 a national league (previously it had been regional) and developing a new tier 5 (Courage League Division 5), which used the old regional north/south divisions. The 1992–93 Courage National 4 South was the sixth full season of rugby union within the fourth tier of the English league system, currently known as National League 2 South. By the end of the campaign Sudbury were crowned league champions, 2 points clear of runners-up London Welsh. London 3 North East was an English rugby union league that was the eighth level of club rugby union in England and was available to sides from north east London, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Promoted clubs move into London 2 North East. Relegated teams tended to drop to Eastern Counties 1 or Essex 1 depending on geographical location, with new teams also coming from these leagues. The league was discontinued at the end of the 2016–17 season as the RFU decided to instead create two new leagues - London 3 Eastern Counties and London 3 Essex - to reduce travelling times for teams involved.
