Sudan Freedom Walk
On April 5, 2006 Sudan activist and former slave Simon Deng and a band of supporters completed an arduous 300-mile trek on foot from New York City to Washington, D.C. as part of the historic Sudan Freedom Walk. The three-week-long event was Deng's personal protest against the ongoing genocide and slave trade in Sudan, most notably in the nation's western Darfur region, where more than 300,000 civilians had been slaughtered and over 2 million displaced since 2003 alone. Political participation The Sudan Freedom Walk came to a close after three weeks with a rally before the steps of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. on the afternoon of April 6, 2006, coinciding with Congressional passage of the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act, which required Sudan to comply with several human rights standards or face sanctions. Simon Deng
Simon Aban Deng is a South Sudanese-American human rights activist living in the United States. A survivor of child slavery, Deng's activism primarily focuses on slavery in Sudan and on South Sudanese self-determination. Biography Deng was born in a Shilluk village in southern Sudan. In 1969, at the age of nine, his village was "raided by Arab troops in the pay of Khartoum". Deng and his family escaped and relocated to a refugee camp in Makkal. There, he was abducted by a neighbor and brought north alongside three other children. In the north, he was "given to an Arab family as a 'gift'". During his time as a slave, Deng was responsible for domestic chores, such as fetching water. He remembers being punished for not responding loudly enough, beaten by groups of other children, and having nothing but "patience ..and my faith" as friends. Joseph Crowley
Joseph Crowley (born March 16, 1962) is an American former politician who served as U.S. Representative from New York's 14th congressional district from 1999 to 2019. He was defeated by Democratic primary challenger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in what was viewed as one of the biggest upsets of the 2018 midterm elections. During his tenure, Crowley served as Chair of the House Democratic Caucus from 2017 to 2019, as well as the local chairman of the Queens County Democratic Party from 2006 to 2019. He previously served in the New York State Assembly from 1987 to 1998. After leaving Congress, he joined the Washington, D.C. lobbying and law firm Squire Patton Boggs.
