Subotica (horse)
Subotica (foaled February 13, 1988 in Orne) is a French Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1992. Background Subotica is a bay horse bred by Paul de Moussac at his Haras du Mezeray in Lower Normandy. Through his sire, Pampabird, owned by de Moussac, Subotica is a descendant of the great Nearco. He was out of de Moussac's mare Terre de Feu, a daughter of the 1967 United Kingdom Horse of the Year, Busted. Purchased and raced by Olivier Lecerf, Subotica was trained by André Fabre and ridden in all his major races by Thierry Jarnet. Racing career In 1991, Subotica ran second in the Prix du Jockey Club to Suave Dancer, whom he had beaten in the Prix Ganay. Pampapaul
Pampapaul (24 March 1974 – 1979) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old he was one of the best colts of his generation in Ireland, winning the National Stakes and being placed in both the Railway Stakes and the Royal Lodge Stakes. In the following spring he recorded his biggest success with an upset victory over The Minstrel and Nebbiolo in the Irish 2,000 Guineas but failed to reproduce the form and was well-beaten in his last three races. He made a very promising start as a breeding stallion but died in 1979 after only two seasons at stud. Background Pampapaul was a "rangy, strong" chestnut horse with a white star and muzzle and three white socks bred in Ireland by his owner Hans Paul. Dr Devious (10 March 1989 – 7 March 2018) was an Irish-bred and British-trained Thoroughbred race horse. In a career which lasted from May 1991 until November 1992, he ran fifteen times and won six races. He is most notable as the winner of the Derby in 1992. Dr Devious's other most significant wins came in the Dewhurst Stakes and the Irish Champion Stakes. He was the second horse, after Bold Arrangement in 1986, to run in both the Kentucky Derby and the Epsom Derby. Background Bred by Lyonstown Stud, near Cashel, County Tipperary, Dr Devious was sired by Ahonoora out of the mare Rose of Jericho, a daughter of two-time Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Alleged. St Jovite (11 March 1989 – 9 January 2016) was an American bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse bred and owned by Virginia Kraft Payson. He was sired by Pleasant Colony, winner of the 1981 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. His dam, Northern Sunset, was a granddaughter of the pre-eminent sire of the 20th century, Northern Dancer. Sent to race on European turf courses under Irish trainer Jim Bolger, in 1991 St Jovite was voted the Champion 2-year-old in Ireland after winning the Anglesey and Futurity Stakes. User Friendly (foaled 4 February 1989 in England) is a European Champion Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Bred by Stetchworth Park Stud Ltd. in Stetchworth, East Cambridgeshire, she was out of the mare Rostova and a descendant of the great Nearco through her sire, the 1985 Epsom Derby winner, Slip Anchor. Group One, Group 1, Grade I or G1 is the term used for the highest level of Thoroughbred and Standardbred stakes races in many countries. In Europe, the level of races for Thoroughbred racing is determined using the Pattern race system introduced in 1971 and monitored by the European Pattern Committee. Suave Dancer (1988–1998) is a French Thoroughbred race horse. Background Bred by Lillie F. Webb's Xalapa Farm near Paris, Kentucky, Suave Dancer was sired by Green Dancer out of the mare Suavite, both American thoroughbreds. A male line descendant of Northern Dancer through Nijinsky II, and a female line descendant of Ribot via Tom Rolfe, Suave Dancer was owned by French businessman Henri Chalhoub and trained by Chantilly, France-based Englishman, John E. Prix Du Jockey Club
The Prix du Jockey Club, sometimes referred to as the French Derby, is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at Chantilly over a distance of 2,100 metres (about 1 mile and 2½ furlongs) each year in early June. History The format of the race was inspired by the English Derby, and it was named in homage to the Jockey Club based at Newmarket in England.
