Subharmonic Series
In music, the undertone series or subharmonic series is a sequence of Musical note, notes that results from inversion (music), inverting the intervals of the harmonic series (music), overtone series. While overtones naturally occur with the physical production of music on instruments, undertones must be produced in unusual ways. While the overtone series is based upon arithmetic multiplication of frequencies, resulting in a harmonic series (mathematics), harmonic series, the undertone series is based on arithmetic division. Nattiez shows the undertone series on E, as Hugo Riemann, Riemann (''Handbuch der Harmonielehre'', 10th ed., 1929, p. 4) and Vincent d'Indy, D'Indy (''Cours de composition musicale'', vol. The vocal fry register is the lowest vocal register and is produced through a loose glottal closure that permits air to bubble through slowly with a popping or rattling sound of a very low frequency. During this phonation, the arytenoid cartilages in the larynx are drawn together, which causes the vocal folds to compress rather tightly and become relatively slack and compact. This process forms a large and irregularly vibrating mass within the vocal folds that produces the characteristic low popping or rattling sound when air passes through the glottal closure. A subharmonic synthesizer is a device or system that generates subharmonics of an input signal. The ''n''th subharmonic of a signal of fundamental frequency ''F'' is a signal with frequency ''F''/''n''. This differs from ordinary harmonics, where the ''n''th harmonic of fundamental frequency ''F'' is a signal of frequency ''nF''. Subharmonic synthesizers can be used in professional audio applications as bass enhancement devices during the playback of recorded music. Octave effect boxes are a type of special effects unit which mix the input signal with a synthesized signal whose musical tone is an octave lower or higher than the original. The 3rd bridge is an extended playing technique used on the electric guitar and other string instruments that allows a musician to produce distinctive timbres and overtones that are unavailable on a conventional string instrument with two bridges (a nut and a saddle). Mari Kimura
(; born 1962) is a Japanese violinist and composer best known for her use of subharmonics, which, achieved through special bowing techniques, allow pitches below the instrument's normal range. She is credited with "introducing" the use of violin subharmonics, which allow a violinist to play a full octave below the low G on the violin without adjusting the tuning of the instrument. She studied violin with Joseph Fuchs, Roman Totenberg, Toshiya Eto, and Armand Weisbord. She also studied composition with Mario Davidovsky at Columbia University, and computer music at Stanford University. Kimura holds a doctorate in performance from The Juilliard School.
