The Swiss Confederation comprises the 26 cantons of Switzerland. Each canton has its individual structure for further subdivisions. Regions For statistical purposes, Switzerland is subdivided into seven regions at the NUTS-2 level: Cantons The 26 cantons of Switzerland are the member states of the federal state of Switzerland. Each canton except for Aargau, Jura, Thurgau, Ticino, Vaud, and Valais was a fully sovereign state with its own borders, army and currency from the Treaty of Westphalia (1648) until the establishment of the Helvetic Republic in 1798. Nidwalden
Canton of Nidwalden or Nidwald ( ; ; ; ) is one of the 26 cantons forming the Swiss Confederation. It is composed of eleven municipalities and the seat of the government and parliament is in Stans. It is traditionally considered a " half-canton", the other half being Obwalden. Nidwalden lies in Central Switzerland. It borders the canton of Obwalden to the west, the cantons of Lucerne and Schwyz to the north, the canton of Uri to the east and the canton of Bern to the south. The canton is essentially in the Alps, south of Lake Lucerne. It is one of the smallest cantons, the population is 40,287 (in 2007). The largest town is Stans, followed by Hergiswil and Buochs. Région Lémanique
The Lake Geneva region is the region of Switzerland encompassing the cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais. It is one of the NUTS-2 regions of Switzerland. The Lemanic Arc (French: ''Arc lémanique'') is the region on the north side of Lake Léman, stretching out from Geneva to Lausanne and Montreux. Its parts are Geneva, La Côte, Lausanne, Lavaux, La Riviera and le Chablais. The Republic and Canton of Jura (officially in ), less formally the Canton of Jura or Canton Jura ( ; ), is the newest (founded in 1979) of the 26 Swiss cantons, located in the northwestern part of Switzerland.
